Brando’s GMT

I think a lot of us are curious to see what this watch will fetch at auction in a few days. Does anyone else wear their GMTs deliberately without the bezel insert? It certainly has an interesting appearance, kind of industrial chic.

Brando’s:

The bezel insert and it's infinite variety of fade make the GMT interesting imho. Rather boring without for me. If one likes it that is all you need. Nice dial on yours.

I won’t be surprised to see people start wearing their watches without the insert if the auction results are favorable and makes its way to mainstream news. “Hype” as the kids today call it.

Im willing to bet that it wont come anywhere close to the Paul Newman but itll do better than the golf guy's day date probably

Boring if one knew what it was/should be. But interesting if one wants that utilitarian look. If it does well on auction, I suspect the “bezel-less” Tudor Heritage Black Bay 32/36/41 owners will have a good time.

There are several reasons why this Brando GMT is quite different from the Newman Daytona; I'd say the comparison is superficial. But if we focus on this singular watch, and we set the over/under at $10 million, what side would you take?

Tbh, I’d take this side due to functionality and (probably) easier service. But it’s a tough call based on provenance.

considering where this film was shot I wouldn't be surprised if the prop master bought that thing just as it appears from one of the roadside watch repair stalls in manila 😀

I’m getting a pepsi GMT, have the AD pop the bezel off, stash it in a safe, become famous, take the bezel out of the safe, pop it back onto the watch, then auction it off. I guarantee it will do more than a measly 1.9 Mil.

Should be easy enough.

From what I read Brando removed it himself as the prop master didn’t like the looks of the bezel- thought is was too flashy- so he popped it off- it was his personal watch.
I also thought the bezel was integral to keeping the crystal mounted- but that is just what I remember about the construction of the GMT- could be very wrong.
Lastly, auctions like this and the PN Daytona just reminds me that there are a lot of people out there with a lot of money and very different priorities than mine. More power to them.

you are correct about the crystal mounting in that the bezel "assembly" secures the crystal. part of that assembly is the bezel retaining ring under the rotating bezel which secures the crystal in place along with serving as a mounting base for the bezel. that securing ring is still on that brando watch. same goes for the subs and thunderbird style watches.

Will the retaining ring still keep the crystal secure and watertight without the bezel? Not that I would ever imagine doing this to my GMT- the bezel is half the allure.

Without the bezel wouldn't that essentially be the same watch?

Yes, but the GMT bezel has wayyyy more character than the plain and boring steel Bezel that the Explore II have (Explorer owner don't be mad at me) and removing that from an Explorer might actually make the watch looks more interesting (to me ) while for a GMT with a nice faded bezel would be a shame to wear it whitout its stunning bezel.
