my friends brands new PO won't let him wind it up. As soon as he clicks back in from the time setting and time zone changing positions, if he winds clockwise, it starts to lock down, as if it the spring loaded "jump" into position 1 is stuck down

He IS able to move through to position 2 and 3

    Any suggestions?

Sounds like he's screwing down the crown. He's not putting pressure while in the 1st position.

    Right
He's putting zero inward pressure on it

Like it won't disengage from "lock down" mode-
And gentle pull outwards moves it to position 2 (moving hour hand only) but never into just "wind the watch"

Stem cut too short would be my guess...

So it could just be sent in and have the stem replaced, or would you suggest a completely different watch? (Assuming your guess is correct)

    Thanks, Al

Well, if you ask for a new watch (which seems to be the reaction on many forums for the slightest problem) then my guess is the watch that has the problem would be fixed and then put back out for sale as a new watch again. Not sure where it was purchased, but is it was a boutique with a watchmaker (not a boutique technician) on staff, then they could fix this in 10 minutes...
