Recently found myself on a chase for an SMP 300 GMT (ref. 2535.80.00) in good condition, did one better than that, finding one fully NOS, with all factory stickers still intact and chilling in the coffin. Went back and forth for a few weeks on whether or not I should break it open, and am here to report that it is very happily being worn.
Great find. I had one of those a good while back, fondly remembered. Co-axial Bond GMT with wave dial.....what's not to like . Enjoy
Being NOS of the old wave dial is certainly a good find. I looked at this model myself a while back but Omega left the HE valve on this model. While the Great White and the black 2234.50 do not. After a while going backwards and forwards between the three I ended up with a Rolex GMT. Enjoy.
Great point about the HE valve, the absence of which is one of the main reasons I bought my black 2234.50 just as that model's production run ended eight or so years ago. Still rocking that one on my wrist! I notice that all of the Planet Ocean GMT variants have retained the HE valve as well, sadly. But then I've never really understood the need to graft a GMT function onto an already-chunky 600m diver anyway. I guess Omega has another chance to get it right with the new SMP if they want to.
She’s a beaut!! Great proportions and that blue...awesome find! Wear, and wear it well! No regrets!! It is a ‘she’ right?
On the subject of proportions, I just remembered why I enjoyed mine so much....the standard Seamaster on bond bracelet I never could get it to fit properly, always too loose or tight. The co-axial GMT is slightly thicker and fitted me like a glove. It surprised me when they dropped it from the range, especially seeing as GMTs of some description appear to be popping up all over the place now.
Funny you mentioned this – I had a similar experience. The standard 300 actually felt a little too thin – much prefer the GMT, which measures in-line with the 2500-series Planet Oceans, and fits my wrist perfectly as well. Baselworld this year proved that the GMT is the hottest thing right now, and all of Omega's 8900-series GMT options are simply too big. Would be nice to see an Omega competitor to the Black Bay GMT soon.
Very nice find! I guess is the one was for sale on Ebay not too long ago. Yours has the 2628D movement, last of its kind! I had one of these before: and will probably get another one in the future as it is an awesome watch!
Wow I never even saw one of these before, nice. I came close to a deal on a black & silver bezel late 90's GMT a few weeks back but the seller backed out, was bummed.
The GMT was my first Omega, its a great watch! I found it a little heavy for daily office life, but such a cool watch!
