Good Morning Gents!

So I have a friend who has been Omega-curious for some time. He often asks me questions about Omega's since I have one and am into the brand (8500 Aqua Terra Wave Dial/Rose Gold).

His focus is on the relatively-new Blue Speedmaster 57' heritage manual slim (the one with Clooney all over instagram). He has become pretty-frustrated in his inability to obtain this watch as our AD's in town don't seem to be able to get it and other places he looks don't seem to have it in stock. So as a result, he goes on tirades about how Omega is creating "artificial demand for these watches" and "you just wait man, after these prices go up, they'll say they have 40 in the back room!" All of his ranting aside, it is clear that he really wants to obtain this reference.

So with the knowledge of this group, can any of you share strategy on best ways to obtain that reference?

What are the ADs' reasons for not getting one? Is the story any different with an OB?

So he says both the AD's and the OB's are having trouble getting it. When I look online, it appears he's telling the truth as I have only seen the blue on in stock at Reed's a few times since his plight began. He says the OB told him they have had 2 in stock since the model's history (he's telling the truth as I've tried one of those two on prior to all of this) and they never got more and are not being told when they can get more. An OB in San Diego said if he put $1000 down, there were a couple in front of him, but that as soon as they came in he would obtain it. Because of this, he has declared that Omega is working in some conspiracy to pump this model up on instagram and then choke the market out to build demand to get people into stores to sell other watches that they are overstocked with while they wait for this blue speedmaster. He is hesitant to put money down on the reference at the AD or the OB when they can't give him an exact "you will have it by....." (As an admission that does seem very Rolex-like of a scenario)

I can only relate my experience with a seemingly much more available model. My AD was up front when I initially inquired about a certain Seamaster. They hadn't received any and there were several people in front of me. I confirmed my interest and they said they would call me when they received one. No obligation and no money down. They called some time later having got one on rubber and several times after that. Eventually I went in to look at it once they got it on the bracelet. Then I purchased it. It ended up being seven months.

I'd ask every AD or the OB to give me a call when they get one in as I'm interested in one but would like to see it in person before making a decision. Maybe they are getting them and maybe there many people in front of you and that's the reason you can't get one. Maybe none of them ever get any and there is an actual shortage. Assuming there is an AD or OB that's actually interested in a sale and actually can get one, you should get a call and be able to look at one. Go look at it and if you like it, confirm your interest and then wait for the call. They might want some money up front. Depending on the time between you asking to look at one and when they call, you can decide if you want to give them money down.

All of the colored dial models have been slow to roll out for whatever reason....Covid, supply chain, demand and other things are always given as the reason. Just have to be patient. If in the US sign up online to be notified when they are available from their eCommerce platform, and then jump on it.

@Evitzee and @josiahg52 thanks for the advice. I've told him things like this in the past and that with a high demand watch, you'll have to be patient and also not be afraid to put some money down and get it back if you don't like the watch in person. I think he has just convinced himself that due to 4 months of interest in the model and not being able to see one in person or speak to a store that can show him one on demand, he just thinks it's a grand conspiracy and that Omega has some market choke/artificial demand process going on. I've tried to inform him that if that were the case, they'd do that with Diver and Moonwatch 3861 so they could actually see ROI on such a proposed effort LOL

Also, his conspiracy theory was routed in the AD's being blocked from having the Blue Speedmaster to get people to come to the OB's... Yet ironically, Reeds AD is the only one I've seen that has a new one in stock (I've seen at least 2 maybe 3 on their stock) versus all the OB's he's visited in his travel job (San Diego, Atlanta, Denver, Miami).

Don't know about other places, but the AD near me in Tampa (part of the Watches of Switzerland conglomeration) has one listed in stock and can ship with a two day delivery -- might be stock from the entire country, though.

So he might need to check with some of the big chains that do mail order and see if he can get one.

FWIW, I've seen the black dialed one starting to show up on the grey market, but none of the colored ones yet.

Good advice. Just checked Mayors, and they have the Blue ‘57 on strap ready for delivery and on bracelet estimated at 3 weeks. They’re out there, but in limited supply for sure.

Just buy it online on the Omega website. I’ve seen it available off an on for the last two months. You just need to check their website periodically. The black on strap, green on bracelet and strap and red on strap are available now.

Omega's site should be just be able to throw a bracelet on a watch that comes with a strap to make it show in-stock.

You would think so, but the watches are packed with the model number that separates them, so they can’t. The website is its own store separate from an AD, OB and the service center that supplies the parts. If you can’t wait for the AD or OB to get you one, but the website has half of what you want, you could always just order the bracelet from an OB that would likely have the bracelet or get it in a couple of weeks. Tough deal. My AD hasn’t even gotten a single 57 speedmaster or green Seamaster dive since they were announced a year ago, but you can get them at an OB or online. How sad is that?!?

Just got the burgundy last night. I'm a huge fan of this model. It feels very premium and like a current watch.
Omega does set themselves apart by putting the technology first.

I put a deposit down on this same watch about 1 month ago at a high volume Omega Boutique. Demand has been high and Omega is behind on production trying to fill the orders. That is the full story, they are not holding back to create demand hype. Omegas CEO commented on this July last year in a NY Times article about luxury watch wait lists…which Omega does have for several references:

“There is no waiting list strategy at Omega. These lists are due to the incredible success of our iconic watches. My goal is to shorten the wait list. We want everyone to be able to get a watch in a short time.”

I believe him, I’m just staying patient waiting for production to catch up to demand.

Moyer Fine Jewelers.... Ask for Derek. I've worked with him on many purchases.
