Wondering if anyone has a 2998 with a blue soleil dial and if so what do you think about the recent re-release? I understand that these are very rare

In my opinion, re-releases increase the value/desirability of the originals, mainly from increased exposure

Interesting, although sometimes, it can have the opposite effect: the new one is SO much cheaper, and might scratch the itch, so why continue lusting after the rare, expensive original?

Simply because of the scarcity of the older model. People value uniqueness and stories. While the new FOiS that Omega released now is awesome, it won't affect the value of the older models as Omega can, and will, push thousands of the new FOiS out.

Apart from using a watch as a watch, which my answer would be "better feeling"

I generally reference Pokemon investors: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokeInvesting/ - these guys still buy $100-200k worth of cards even after watching beanie babies on Netflix and knowing its a controlled market. The vintage 1st Ed Charizard is still a valuable card. They equally hoard modern stuff as well, so from a collecting/hoarding/speculative investing viewpoint, modern fueling interest is definitely a positive thing for vintage collectors

The only negative part is, if these 1st Ed Charizard's all disintegrated, no one would hoard modern cards any more, so those vintage cards surviving the test of time also drives interest for modern watches, they are seen as things that will become more valuable one day, from this viewpoint Omega not selling protective/replenishing parts to enthusiasts is hurting themselves too. Really wish we could buy crystals, crowns and gaskets to protect watches. Just wanted to plug this and vent 😁

Real men invest in Magic The Gathering, not this Pokemon kids stuff. 😄

The thing about the blue soleil dials is that there is a persuasive theory backed up with evidence that they were fitted as service dials in the late 60s to early 1970s so in fact there may never have been a 2998 that left the factory with one. Or perhaps any Speedmaster at all. Indeed some have short indices so those at least can’t have been made before 1969 at the earliest and yet are seen on 321s.
