Black Dial Pie-Pans: If you’re asking for advice, you SHOULDN’T be buying one!

I think the point about it being on eBay is key here- or any online auction, small auction house with an online presence…basically anything on the internet. I see many new members posting pics (but no link- for fear of claim jumpers) asking about originality. If you found it online, and it’s still there- there is a reason. Veteran collectors have constant eyes on the market and know when anything pops up.
Even if you luckily find a new posting for a legit rarity, in the time it takes for you to look it up or ask someone else, it will be gone.
The prize goes to those who know and have fast fingers.
If it's an actual auction with time remaining then there's no reason the item would necessarily be dubious. You're talking about fixed-price listings. Even then, if it's with a high end dealer who is trying to push the price past the previous market high, causing collectors to hesitate, it could still be legit.

With a regular Omega I start from the assumption it’s real and untouched then follow steps to see if it’s fake or redialled. With a black dial Omega dress watch it is safer to start from the assumption it’s fake and take steps to see if it’s real or original. I too think a noob should just pass the black dials by until they really know what they are doing. It will save a lot of time and heartache.

there seem to be two common types of colors of text, gilt or white/silver. Are there different manufacturers of the dials?

We need similar PSA for Ranchero. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to post warnings like this.

I was looking for years before I finally managed to find a black Connie. They just kept eluding me and it was frustrating when others showed up here with their latest black find. In the meantime I just kept looking and looking at pictures, reading and researching more.

As has been said a good one is very tricky to identify for a new collector and when identified the key thing I'd say would be to be able to move quickly and close a deal.

That being said I have bought three of mine from EBay in the last three years for prices I found extremely acceptable.

These were all items listed as not for international sending, with poor pictures and in no reserve auctions, so advantageous for knowledable buyers.

Here a couple of mine, left with white print and right with gilt. The 14381 is the most recent addition to my black Constellation collection and is also one of the EBay finds.

I think we are all happy to answer a question.

But when a Newbie starts sending 4 watches a day for you to check for him it gets a bit tired.

Some of these guys listen and I have had long chats with and still chat with regularly, and they are on the road as a collector.

But have had a lot of look at 20 dodgy watches in a week and no willingness to do any research for themselves.

A car boot sale with other things not all watches, is most likely going to be the one owner barn find that is a real score.

One of the first things on eBay I look at is what else they sell. If it’s only watches is different to 20 pages of random stuff and 1 watch

I’ve already found my ideal watch so this is a moot point.
However , those black dial Constellations; especially Rose Gold are very special and I’m sure a very special price.
I can understand all the interest. I will be satisfied (as will the wife) just to look at the pictures

I am not into Connies but that is heart attack material right there. Congrats.

Those shipping restrictions are very advantageous, I managed to snag a black Seamaster 30 because of bad pictures and the seller not shipping abroad. Not as rare and desirable as a black Constellation, but not bad for my first Omega I guess.

Both sporting 1035’s too? Those bracelets look much better on those black dials than the 1035 did on my constellation.

As a total newbie, I guess I should have passed on it, then. This was my first vintage Omega.

It now has the correct crown!

the guy Kabatime has posted a rose gold black dial constellation for 4250usd. for me black dial looks too small on wrist, I know they are rare and have their own charm but quite not does it for me.

If I remember correctly, you picked this up from an Omega dealer, not from an eBay auction?

Not 1035s, they are on earlier versions, one a 7912 and the other a 7077

I call redial on that one. Font isn’t consistent and doesn’t look gilt. Also, hands should be faceted.

Yes, that is correct. This watch was at a small satellite store (the main store is an Omega dealer) and the salesperson there didn't really know what it was. Whether through this outlet or eBay, it was through the help of the knowledgable folks here that helped me through the process.

I am still hunting a clean one with steel dial furniture, feels like an impossible task at this point. Happy to have a steel/rose example though, recycling an old picture. One of my favourite Omega watches for sure.
