This is my first post and I wanted to say “Hi” as I have a feeling I will be spending a lot of time here satisfying my new found addiction.

I’m looking to buy my first Vintage Omega watch. The seller believes that it is a vintage 1950’s Omega Seamaster Deville cross-hair automatic (more on this later).

This is the info I have;

Serial Number: 1830XXXX, Movement Type: Calibre 562, other written numbers: 14 770 4SC and 65999

The watch has gold plate case, cross-hair campaign dial with date, small Omega Crown at the center of the crystal, the case back is stainless steel with the Omega Sea horse. The strap was replaced with a genuine (whatever this means) leather one. There is no box or papers but it was serviced in 2012. No paperwork again to prove this.

My research:

I spent last two days trying to find as much information as possible Google searching. Not an easy task at all. Based on the serial number I believe the watch was made in 1960-1961. Movements type Automatic (mechanical) Caliber Number 562/563, Other Cal. 562 (COSC sometimes) Created in 1958, 24 jewels, Cal 563 Created in 1965, 17 jewels Central sweep-second hand and water resistance of 30 meters.

What do you guys think? Any advice or suggestions? I am missing anything?

All I got Efauser... I was planning to request for it to be serviced before any cash is exchanged.

 

Suppose it really all depends on the asking price. I would REALLY suggest to get more pics of the seller.

 

I would want shots of the crown side and back at least.

If you have a watchmaker I'd ask him about the service costs. If you don't have a watchmaker you may want to find one.

"Service" on a watch quality and thoroughness can vary wildly.

Asking price is around $850 Canadian.

I think the seller is asking to much. I don't see him opening it and taking any pics of the watch. He is not a watch person and doesn't feel comfortable.

From your avatar, it looks like you've been bitten by more than the vintage Omega bug........

 

If you send this to Omega, the service costs could exceed the value of the watch, and they may also change parts that will devalue the watch...they are not the first choice for vintage service for most collectors...

IMO, the price is very high for this reference, especially factoring in a service. My best advice is to slow down. Spend some time poking around the sales section here - including past sales. Get a better sense of the various references and values before making your first buy.

 

That's roughly $615 US working it out in my head. Not a crazy price but absolutely on the high side. I think it's 20% to 25% over what you can find without a great deal of effort.

 

Just ran the 14770 case reference number thru the vintage data base, came up as a Seamaster DeVille, all info matches OPs findings. Except, it gives case material as 18k solid gold. Ok, we know the vintage data base is not perfect, but perhaps a possibility dose exist. It would explain the price. Oh it is a unishell case.

 

I dig the numbers on this

 

$850 is a bit rough.
