There has been work done to the hands also,
and possible scratches on the dial.
How does the movement look??

That’s a -78? The dial says -76 or earlier.

How was the year determined?
Sorry for this confusion,
I started with 78 in the title because my remembrance of the date in the back was wrong. I opened it again today the second time ....

After all, it narrows down that all parts except the bracelet are of corresponding time. With issues:
-heavily polished case
-dial with distorted lume and damages on the surface
-hands with abuses and lumerepair

A little plus is: it got a recent service (in 2022) and all functions are ok. But after this review who knows if the work was performed orderly....

Maybe a stupid question…but do you own the watch?
Or are you thinking about to buy it…?

I own the watch .... purchased it a while ago for 3300,- USD well aware that there were issues. But wanted a daily beater with no worries because of the service done. The bezel started to distract me so I asked here to get a more profound review of it. Now this ended up with a complete evaluation of the watch which I really appreciate. No reason to complain from my side, I hope no-one here feels offended or disstressed. Sorry again if so. This is a great place to learn, I am very thankful to have you experts here to sort out bad from good.

Ok I see other people pointed that out lol.

It’s a76.

@OneTwo that dial went through late 1977 with a change over in Sept of 77 for the -76.

No I am calling out the members who didn't notice the font on the dial which is the differentiator for the -74 and most -76 dials. LOL.. Including one I know should have known better....

As for the watch, the dial lume damage is odd and shows the dial was spun slightly in storage while out of the watch. The hands seemed like they are not a matched set. Unless the price is great I am not a huge fan of how this presents.

$3.3k serviced with bracelet, you did fine.

My original ‘72 bezel got beaten to death in my first 15 years of regular use (including popping off the watch falling down a ravine). I put a modern service bezel on it (bought it from a member here) and I’m happy with the way it looks for regular wear.

Thank you for the detailed description. I am in the process of learning and the Speedmaster-world is indeed full of hidden secrets....
I was aware that this watch is a mix of parts, but my foremost concern was the bezel. Now, my mind is eased as it seems to be at least an Omega part. I has the feeling that the font is too thick, the serif of the seven too obscure.
The dial has a number of issues.... I see your point that the short S should belong to an earlier reference....
No worries, happy to help and heck I imagine I’ll still be learning about these Speedmasters for a long time to come. From the looks of it though with the following replies, I hope I didn’t cause any confusion.

@Foo2rama appreciate the clarification on when the Medium S - Nonstep dial was produced through! I noted early -76 examples in my response but didn’t realize they were produced so long into the production of the -76.

That dial, if it is in fact not a stepped dial (better photos would be needed), IIRC it looks to be what should be on -74 or very early -76 examples.

Yeah I collected over a hundred extracts of -76's to figure out when the change over happened, and I got it down to a two day period in Sept of 77. Since no one else cares about the -74 through -78 I kinda became the defacto WIS on these.

Prior to this it was assumed only early production -76 had that "S".

At $3300 I wouldn't be worried. The bracelet is nice to have.
It is not easy to find a speedmaster with fewer issues at this level

To be honest, I like to wear my watches with no worries. They have scars and stains and scratched crystals. It is the same thing with wedding rings: if you wear them 20 years non-stop, it does not make a difference if the ring started polished or blasted. They end up the same...

Well…umm, that one word for it.
Exactly… pedantic arse about something no one cares about is another.

I was going to say obsessive, but we can go with that.

Hm, may I ask to what date you would date my -76?
