Seller abruptly cancelled the order after a winning bid on this watch after relisting after another completed auction. When asked why he cancelled the order the following response was given. Grinds me gears.

If he doesn’t want to risk getting a lower price than he wants to accept, then he either shouldn’t list it for auction without a reserve price or he should list it as a buy it now listing. No point in getting upset over it though. Sellers do it all the time and eBay does nothing about it.

It's really eBay's fault for routinely allowing this blatant disregard of their rules. People are gong to exploit it.

Doesn’t the seller still need to pay the final value fee if they cancel a completed auction? Sounds like the seller is just adding to their “lost capital”.

Yes, which is a big part of the reason that eBay doesn’t care. They are still getting their cut.

I think depending on how you report it I.e. broken eBay doesn’t charge the fees.

It might vary by location as I don’t think you’re charged fees in the UK for cancelling an auction.

As an example, I bought a seamaster in an eBay UK auction a few weeks ago. The seller later cancelled the sale, not because he wasn’t happy with the price, but because he “didn’t realise I had to pay such large fees”.

I spoke to him via eBay messages a couple of times over the next few days to try and persuade him to honour the sale and it certainly seemed like he hadn’t incurred any charges.

I don't know how but I've read that sellers can cancel a sale as "canceled by buyer" which avoids them having to pay the final value fee as well as racking up "points" for canceling sales

I think that canceling a transaction may not be the same as ending an auction early. These cheaters know all the tricks.

Happenned to me twice and I never cancelled, the bloody seller was lying.

@Rasputin if you really want the watch - since the seller has provided you evidence that he is the one who purposefully canceled in order to make more money outside of ebay, it wouldn't hurt to open a dispute to see if ebay will force him to fulfill the "contract." Perhaps at least he might get a smack in the hand for circumventing the rules.

[Edit] I see he would still go through ebay, but you still might have a case.
