Omega made literally thousands of both 30/40’’’ and 27/40’’’. It is most certainly not unique! No museum worth visiting would even consider it. Furthermore, there is nothing military about it. In spite of many opportunities, Omega never made any military mileage out of the ‘Goliaths’. This size of calibre and watch were also made by other manufacturers at the time. In fact, Omega made an even larger version (with the same 27’’’ and 30’’’ movement), the 27/60’’’ and 30/60’’’. The watch itself is NOT in good condition, as is clear to see: the dial is damaged (repair over the dial pin between 4 and 5 and multiple hairlines) and the movement is not in clean condition. Although the 27/40’’’ is not found as often as the 30/40’’’, a watch in this condition might sell on eBay for $500. The seller is asking $9000. I am not suggesting that he’s a crook – just ignorant. He writes that he “Never saw similar”: well, that says everything: they’re to be had all the time. Beware!
I’m not sure what photos you’d like. The point of my post was to highlight a ridiculous eBay advert. However, here goes. Firstly, a photo of his advert. The advertised watch is: Not unique Not military Not a deck watch Not a museum piece Not worth 10% of the asking price (in my opinion) Secondly, here’s a photo of the poor dial on the advertised watch, showing the damage as best I can: Finally, here’s an image of a 30/60’’’ – itself not rare but considerably bigger and more unusual than the watch that he is selling (I hold a 30/40’’’ in my hand – and on the right a 30’’’ and 19’’’ for size comparison). And none of these is unique, a deck watch, a museum piece – and only one has a military history:
But you realise that at this price it will stay on eBay with years... Many peoples supra evaluate their items.
Photos are needed as when the listing disappears from EBay over time we can know what has been spoken about if you search this thread years from now..... Someone might find it a bargain
Absolutely. In fact there’s another 30/40’’’ currently on eBay (maybe also unique, deck watch, military and a museum piece – apart from a hairline that goes right across the dial) which has been for sale for (at least) 4 years: currently $2,400, reduced from $4,000…
Fair enough. I didn’t think the watch itself said much – it was the content of the advert that was the topic and my original post described exactly what the watch was. But anyway, it is now fully-illustrated for posterity – and as Seaman says, it’ll be there for years…
... and also "From my private collection". In some cases, with ridiculous prices, things will remain in their 'private collection'.
