Some of you may have noticed I've been a bit cranky lately (what's new you all say).

Well, after a nine month battle with level 7 prostate cancer I had my final post-op consultation with my specialist today.

My blood tests taken last week show a PSA level of UNDETECTABLE ::psy:: ::psy:: ::psy:: ::psy:: ::psy:: ::psy::

In addition, after having a robotic assisted radical prostatectomy, he said I had achieved his "trifecta".

    That is:

1 - Cancer gone (prostate too )
2 - No Incontinence post surgery
    3 - No erectile impairment :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I'll still need follow-up reviews for a while, but the weight off my mind has been lifted and I'm almost normal again ::psy::

    The point of my post?

I know that there are many on this forum in the danger years, and, if you haven't done so already, my wish is that you get your doctor to check your PSA count, and even have your DRE (I won't spell it out).

A moment or two of discomfort is a small price to pay!

And even for our younger men, having regular tests (yearly) gives a history which can give very early indications and allow early intervention and hopefully you won't have to go down the track that I did.

So there you go folks, my Darlin' is bringing home a special bottle of "medicine" to celebrate tonight :D ::beer::

And now all of you, off to see your doctor.

    Cheers

    Jim

I'm not really a (or, more precisely, a really) religious man but all I can say is God bless you and your family as you rejoice in this this glorious news!

Yes, your gratefulness should manifest itself in you becoming that annoying, preachy, self righteous guy who hectors, harangues and haunts every young buck who assumes they'll live to 90 with no problems. And, we'll love you for it! :).

    God bless !

    for number 4...

You could probably tell your wife you're buying a post-prostate-cancer watch to celebrate. That's a hard one to say no to.

Have to admit I've never in my life had the PSA count or received the two finger salute mainly on account of being a wuss.

You won't feel a thing

Far better that you suffer a moment of indignity than................well, I won't describe the op.

Great news Jim. Another win for our healthcare system here.

As someone who works in health policy, id endore the need for DREs, PSAs are more problematic, with far too many false positives and false negatives. Rigorous cost benefit analysis of screening for prostate cancer using PSA screening has come out slightly against PSA screening and many GPs recommend against screening if you have no other symptoms.

Thanks for sharing this and you're right, this is a great reminder for me (and all of us) to schedule a physical. Never a fun process but a necessary process. Congratulations! I'm glad to hear of your progress and success. I will refrain from commenting on #3 though... ;)

    Wonderful news, congrats.

Another note for those at or nearing 50 and perhaps those well past if you haven't, PLEASE get a colonoscopy!

Completely painless and oh so important.
