I recently won an eBay auction for a vintage Seamaster, 166.090, with the 1002 movement. It is losing time so obviously is in need of service. I took it to the local Authorized Dealer who quoted me $700-$800 for a factory service. I was not willing to pay that and I understand that the watch would receive a complete overhaul. My goal is an accurate watch. I presume that a cleaning and lubrication will make this happen. I have picked up several automatic and manual wind watches that could use a service also. Having said all that, what is a reasonable cost for the service I described? Would an Omega be more costly that a Gruen or Waltham? Finally, how does one find a watchmaker capable of doing the service?
My watchmaker would charge about $150 USD to service that particular movement. This includes total disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, reassembly and adjustment. This doesn't include the price of any replacement parts that are necessary. Post your location and perhaps someone here can recommend a competent watchmaker in your area. Welcome to the forum.
My watchmaker charges me around $250AUD not including parts for an automatic. WatchGuy and Mitka both charge 170GBP (around $300AUD) and their services are highly regarded in the UK by members in these forums. As @Gordon Heavyfoot says, mention your location and members will be happy to provide recommendations.
I'm located in the Kansas City, MO metro area. I am not opposed to sending away for service if the servicer is trustworthy and reasonable.
Try this search to find an AWCI (American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute) professional near you specializing in vintage watches. You may also try the NAWCC (National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors) search page.
Also, this well known vintage watch shop is in your area. Call them, and see who they recommend for a service: https://www.coolvintagewatches.com/
Thank you for the replies. I am curious about how much most people pay for service. Anyone willing to share?
I’ve mailed my watch to Bruno Park in Phoenix. His prices were very reasonable and he’s well regarded online. The one piece I sent him so far was completed in 15 days. I believe his website is www.vintagewatchrestoration.com
My swatch-trained guy in NYC will do a full disassembly service for that and most other Omega 3-handers for about 1/4th of that quoted Omega service. PM me for details
My watchmaker in Canada normally cost 300 to 500 CAD to do a full service for Omega. But my Rolex 5513 cost me 1300CAD to do .......
I just had Alberta time services in Calgary work on my constellation. A little more expensive, ($595) but had it done in just over a week.
