As some of you may recall, several months ago I discussed the purchase of a 2998-61. After much thought and encouragement from forum members I decided to go for it. I have just received it after undergoing service by my trusted watchmaker and matched it with number 6 end pieces and an early 1962 7912 bracelet. Good times...

Looks great with the correct silver ring holding in the crystal instead of the incorrect black ring that you bought it with. An amazing piece for 55 years old!!

Your comment made me curious. My 2998-5 does not and did not have the silver compression ring at the time I received the watch. I could be mistaken, but I think the crystal that was in the watch was the original. The crystal was in extremely poor condition, way beyond what would be considered for restoration.
Did all Speedmasters in the 2998 series come with silver compression rings?. At the time I replaced the crystal I recall having problems with a parts supplier and ended up ordering from two different places. I received two crystals one with a black ring and one with silver. I had the black installed because that was how the watch was setup. Now you have me wondering.
    All opinions welcome!

Hello, I'm not at home right now to reference MWO, but I believe the silver retaining ring for the crystal was used through the 105.002 then they switched to the black ring beginning with the 105.003. I'm sure others will confirm or deny for you.

sky21 is correct, silver tension ring up to and including 105.002. all 2998s should have them. not a huge deal, get it swapped out at next service.

Thanks for the kind remarks. FYI from left to right: transitional 145.022-68st, Ed White also on number 6s and period 7912, and 2998. Debating whether to substitute strap on the transitional with a 1039 but looks too good in a strap. Darn speedy bug...
