I do think that anyone with an OMP race suit should be able to double-declutch to synchronise the engine & drivetrain revs and avoid the nasty crunch. Perhaps even heel-and-toe to do it while braking too.
I have driven a real crash box on a 1904 car: now that was a pig to change gear on with the hand throttle to try to match revs. Steered beautifully though. The 250LM would have dog engagement, not moving the actual gears.
