Authenticity of an Omega Genève 131.018 (first buy)

Hi All,

May I have your opinion about this Omega watch ?

I really like the design but I am quite new to the world of vintage watches. The seller claims it is a (near) NOS watch from 1968. The description says : "Reference 131.018 mid-size Omega Genève serial number 261445xx production year 1968. Stunning watch in (near) NOS condition with original box, strap, buckle and tag! The watch itself is in pristine condition with also 100% original parts. The watch is fitted with an Omega 601 hand wound movement which has just been fully serviced."

Do you think it is an authentic Omega with no redial ? Also, what would be a fair price for this watch ? Finally, could you tell me why I find no trace of the 131.018 reference on the omegawatches.com/vintage-watches website ?

Thank you very much for your help !

Thank you for your quick feedback dsio.

The sellers is asking 700€ for the watch. The 300-500€ price tag you indicate is for the same reference in the same condition ? Do the original box and strap increase the value of the watch ?

Thank you,
Alesque

I'm no expert on OMEGA watches by any means, but I am a typographic designer by vocation and that means I'm pretty sharp when it comes to lettering and logos.

The OMEGA logo on the watch face doesn't look right. The middle V of the M doesn't reach the baseline when it should.

Compare it to another Geneve from the same generation where the logo does look right.

This is in itself doesn't mean it's fake but it would certainly flag doubt in my mind.

It looks fine to me. I’d say it’s reasonably priced too.

Hi All,

Overpriced for a 31mm watch. This is Seamaster price territory. It's too small for me, I like them 34mm.

I really like the design but I am quite new to the world of vintage watches. The seller claims it is a (near) NOS watch from 1968. Without a receipt from the watchmaker, assume it will need a service.

Do you think it is an authentic Omega with no redial ? Also, what would be a fair price for this watch ? Finally, could you tell me why I find no trace of the 131.018 reference on the omegawatches.com/vintage-watches website ?

I think it's likely this is an original, unrefinished dial. Keep in mind, this is a Geneve, not a Seamaster, so expect more variation in the dial print and overall quality.

Please note, despite the fact that the Omega database calls this a Seamaster, this does not appear to be a Seamaster. The Omega database is not infallible. This does not say Seamaster on the dial, does not say Seamaster on the case back, and does not appear to be waterproof. This appears to have a dustproof snap on case back with no gasket.

For a "freshly serviced" watch, the balance amplitude is low if the watch is fully wound. The timing machine is set incorrectly, so the lift angle should be 49 degrees, and not 52. The displayed amplitude is shown higher than is actually is because of this, so it will more likely be in the 230 degree region, which is low for this movement.

Unless you have evidence of a service being done on this watch (such as an invoice from a reputable service provider that can be tied to the watch) I would assume that it hasn't had a proper service done, and factor that into your offer.

Cheers, Al
