Are Speedmaster Serial Numbers sequential for 145.022?

I've still been learning and searching for my birth year Speedy. Many thanks for all who have given help on here.

I ran into a potential one recently but the serial number has me a bit confused. It's a 145.022 and the listing indicates 1982 and the Serial is 45251874.

When I search for that on ILMS, it shows 1982 June, which is great. But when I run the Birthdate search/Production Reverse Estimate, it shows June 1982 having a range of 43207960 to 43278140 and 1982 in general having a range of 42842540 to 43723420. Both of which would be a much lower number than the watch in question.

Am I overthinking this? Are the serial numbers for Speedys of this age not sequential?

My understanding is that the calculation is entirely reliant on dates and serial numbers that people have shared from the results of their own watches extract from the archives. So the total number of sources isn’t that high to begin with and the pool of data is particularly small for more recent watches which results in these nonsensical results.

The best bet is to look for old sales adverts for 1982 watches with a confirmed extract and then look for a watch in that range. Or ideally buy a watch with an extract.

Thanks - that was really good advice. Searching out specially the Extracts gave me two that seem to be at odds with each other. An August 1982 Extract starting with 45, and then a January 1983 one starting with 44. So.... yeah. Haha. But that gave me a very close serial to what I'm looking for so that narrows things down for me. Thanks again.

No worries. That is a bit strange. When I was looking for a 92 watch I found around 10 extracts and they were all fairly sequential except for two, but they were still a lot closer together in the range.

Maybe Omega were making some changes to the serial number system in 82 or it was just a bit disorganised with parts use?

But you can get pretty close using the extract method and hopefully that will be good enough.
