Omega created 500 watches to commemorate the July 1975 experimental test project ‘Apollo-Soyuz’ - the first joint U.S. and Soviet space flight. With engraving on the case back in both Russian and English, the watch ceremoniously pays homage to the collaboration between the two superpowers and marked moment in history. The interesting side of the story is about the so called ‘Di Marchi’ editions, which we suspect that this example is. The story is told that 100 of the 500 of the limited series were sent to Di Marchi (the Italian distributor of Omega) - not complete, but in ‘kit’ format. These 100 therefore had much earlier movement numbers and mostly all of the same features of the series.
With the Speedmaster as the only watch surviving the rigorous tests put forward by NASA, it was the only choice for the astronauts and cosmonauts at the time. In order to draw complete consistency across the experiment, the Russians were also asked to wear the same timepiece (Omega supposedly unaware all the while until the commencement of the mission).
This particular Omega reference number ST145.0022 was manufactured in 1975-6 and features the red and blue Apollo Soyuz mission patch at 12 o’clock and Saturn IB rocket on the back. Fitted with an 861 original movement, the watch is in overall very good condition with the dial being lightly worn around the minute track in a few locations. The inside of the case back shows signs of wear with the serial numbers visible under a loupe. The timepiece comes with the original bracelet and end links in keeping with the series. It is in excellent condition alongside the original mission patch which matches the dial. The watch is accompanied by the box, patch and stickers. As only one of 500 pieces, this model in its particular condition is extremely rare and sought-after amongst Omega Speedmaster collectors globally. It is arguably even rarer due to its fascinating backstory consistent with the Di Marchi production. Notice it is not actually describing this watch but what it might be
