Apollo 13: Enhanced images reveal life on stricken spacecraft

Great article from the BBC - On April the 13th… the fiftieth anniversary of the fateful oxygen tank explosion in 1970.

Imaging specialist Andy Saunders created sharp stills from low-quality 16mm film shot by the crew (examples below).

Between his twitter feed https://twitter.com/AndySaunders_1
And other resources like https://moonwatchuniverse.tumblr.com/archive there are some amazing independent archives and restoration works being created - and all free to access.

Great for research …and fun.

All example images below NASA/Andy Saunders …. I just wish there was a better focus on the Speedy wrist of Commander Jim Lovell - just shows the challenges of using old school cameras.

The Speedmaster wristwatches are clearly visible, but Jack Swigert wore his Rolex GMT-master under the white sleeve at his lefthand wrist...
Lovell's Speedmaster for example:

That is a great picture - as I saw on another post - must be the best close up of a Speedy on Apollo.

Looking at the LEM panorama above there is also a good picture of the famous improvised C02 scrubber which was central (along with a certain famous speedy timed burn) to them making it home.

I'm a bit surprised by that case profile. Most of the 60's speedmaster's I have handled (too few apparently) have a less gradual slope profile on the lugs.

Remarkable shots from an awe-inspiring mission. Thanks for sharing all.

50 years ago and 55 hours into the mission at this point.

You can replay the Apollo 13 lift off and watch the real time mission experience (exactly 50 years in time later). Check this link out to the website:

Hour 57 and oxygen tank issues being identified and worked through. Not good. Stay tuned for when they round the moon and hit hour 79...

For anyone who has not had a play on this link from @KAP - it really is worth taking some time out to visit the site - and select the real time - T-minus fifty years option...….I wish I could do that
