Hi there, I got offered this watch ... I dont know $hit about AP - not even enough to have a good feeling if its real o fake. I am debating if I should make the effort to get the funds together over the next couple of months. sorry, those pics are all I have at the current state. anybody care to weigh in with an "OK'ish or FAKE'ish" opinion? again, I am not buying this now, but if it checks out, I might put it on my to-do-list (and then of course go the whole 9 yard with watchmaker's expertise) cheers, Al
ok ... what are the givaways? ... dial-fonts, lack of hallmarks/serial #, surprisingly big crown for formal automatic? all of the above?
Perhaps the hallmark is on the side of the case or between the lugs. Also the serial number could be on the inside of the case back. Without seeing them I can't give an opinion.
Not so sure about that. I found another watch similar to this on ebay except with a damaged dial. The font seems to be correct though before giving an opinion on either watch, the hallmark and serial numbers and any writing on the watch must be seen. Without these things this watch (or any watch) should not be purchased. This is all my opinion. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Aud...936791?hash=item33b390b317:g:U~0AAOSwZQxW6acfPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
I remain skeptical. The font(s) used on both examples strike me as being crude compared to those typically used on AP watches. I have posted another contrasting example below, but the most important is the first, as it appears to be the same model. Another bad replacement crown, but the font appears to me to be what AP would much more likely have used originally.
I think it could go either way but again without seeing a hallmark or serial numbers or writing I would stay away from the watch. I suspect the watch if authentic is from the 1980s to early 1990s. Again everything is only my opinion. Here is a moonphase model with printing similar to the watch shown by the OP. Note the lack of serifs on the A.
Just because AP watches look the same doesn't mean they're real. They just might be the same model fake.
I agree they could be fake and there is not enough evidence to tell either way. I think its unlikely that someone would fake these AP models though. That said I would not buy the watch without first seeing more pictures. This is only my opinion though.
I agree with all of you ... interestingly enough, the ebay listing (while having an almost ridicule price) doesn't show a movement pic ... might be due to the water damage of the dial well ... I let that be some other person's problem ...
