There’s one release from this year, that makes me want a release from 2019.
Stick with me on this: Bulgari’s release this year of the world’s thinnest perpetual calendar (pictured in foreground below) means that in the last 7 years Bulgari has broken 6 world records for thinness:
This ‘dink article summarizes the 5 additional world records broken by Bulgari since 2014 (also photographed above):
- 2014 Octo Finissimo Tourbillon, Manual Wind, cal. BVL 268 (1.95mm thick)
- 2016 Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater, with cal. BVL 362 (3.12mm)
- 2017 Octo Finissimo Automatic, cal. BVL 138 (2.33mm)
- 2018 Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic, cal. BVL 288 (3.95mm)
- 2019 Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT, cal. BVL 318 (3.30mm)
And now this perpetual calendar, with retrograde date, at 2.75mm.
Compare the envelope-pushing that Bulgari is doing compared to... any other manufactures these days?
For me, it’s been the 2019 world’s thinnest OF GMT-chrono that is the Bulgari apple in my eye. Among the reasons I’m attracted to it: having an example of what appears to be an impressive legacy Bulgari is building - with this year’s release just continuing that trend.
So, Bulgari’s release of this week makes me even more want the GMT-chrono release from 2019:
I think it's time for you to give in and buy one of these.
Thankfully I’ve been throttled by two things:
(1) this is a watch that must be seen in metal, and COVID hasn’t gotten me there
(2) I’m not buying one at MSRP
Soon as I can see one in flesh, then find one on 2ndary, I’ll be very tempted!
Gotta get the new 2021 exp1 36mm, so glad they brought it back. Also, it is $6,450 MSRP which is close to the asking of its predecessors. Brand new is better... Does that mean I can get one though? Probably not 😗
