Evening Chaps.馃榾

In preparation for writing an Omega Forums sales post, I thought it would be good to do a bit of ground work.
So I scanned the Omega Forums sales posts, checked e-bay, checked the hiked Chrono24 prices and got a 'bricks & mortar' auction house valuation.

I filled in the ( London, UK) Watches of Knightsbridge valuation form, posted some lovely pictures and awaited their reply......... and then the reply came!馃槻 I nearly coughed up my Newcastle Brown Ale! 馃榿

Anybody else had any experience of auction house valuations? 馃槙

Asking W.O.K for a valuation is like asking 'We Buy Anycar' what your brand new Porsche is worth.

It won't be pretty.

Perhaps let @Spacefruit ask for you.
He has a special relationship with WOKs legal department.

Yeah... as long as he could chat about it without publishing any photographs.馃榿

It aint for sale yet... I'm doing a bit of 'novice' preparation work.馃槈 ....... and I thought it would be interesting to know what they would come up with.

Good lord! It couldn't be any worse than the one I got from the lovely people at Fellows Wrist Watches. Their rep had a look at my watch, quoted me a top value of 拢5000 and, to lure me in, offered me a 'Fellows Top Trumps' card game!馃槻....... I hope their auctions are better than their card games! 馃榿

Crazy story, but did you really think you can get any valuable Information from WoK ?
I am bit irritated about your process to sell your (hopefully nice) watch 馃榿
You can send me as the potential buyer a DM to valuate your piece my friend 馃憤

Thankyou.馃憤 I shall bear your kind offer in mind.

I'm still very much a complete novice when it comes to horological matters. I am scratching around making comparisons between the different methods, and platforms, of sale, in order to work out a fair and reasonable price for my watch. It's all part of my quest for knowledge.馃槦

Now see Jonathan, where it gets complicated is when you factor in the partial change for an 861 speedy for you to keep on your wrist. Auction houses don't know how to adjust for that.

I think it's fair to say that the auctions house route will give you the most opportunity for uncertainty, as they rely on a few bidders fighting out over each piece to get their top end estimates... and things don't pan out in the way they'd hope you could miss out on a large chunk of cash.

Knowing sweet F.A. about Speedmaster pricing, is there enough current information on sold listings for you to work out a fair price to ask in the sales section here?

Or even an unfair price, and let the market talk you to where you need to be 馃榿

The problem is that all things being equal condition wise, the tropical aspect of the dial is the "special sauce" which could lead to a vastly higher price. That's what is hard to value properly. But based on some recent sales posts for a -69 and a -78 I'm guess somewhere around $35K would be appropriate 馃榿 (truly I have no idea - it's a market far outside of where I play - "hmm what can I find on ebay for under $75 today?")

Very true Joel.馃榾 I'm sure that when the time is right I will try to keep things 'in house' on Omega Forums, and also look in house for a later Speedy for everyday use.

All the same, for a novice, it's an interesting learning process, and I'm curious to get the hang of how commercial auction houses function. I presume this initial low valuation tactic gives them the opportunity to attract bidders with low reserve thresholds. A good move for the Auctioneer but, carrying an element of risk for the person selling the item.

How many are there 馃槻

A handful of us (@LouS, @cicindela, @kyle L, and a few more) have kept track of when the most watches in the nicest condition come up for sale. We've dubbed these time periods watch seasons. The main one starts in late January and runs into late April as mentioned above. There's a small run in the summer (like a Christmas in July), and a small spurt at the end of fall from November into December.

So let it be written, so let it be sold.
