I've seen infrequent examples of Seamasters from the 60s that have the "background" part of the hippocampus on a SS back a different color - in one case red. Like so - Is this an example of something legitimate?
It could be what's remaining from the "case back goo" used to protect the back from scratches, which was on it from new. Seeing how nice the rest of the case back looks, I'd say this is a reasonable guess. The colour looks to be a fit too.
Not entirely sure about this, but as I understand it that's not actualy colored but residue of the protective film that was applied from the factory. Sometimes this can be seen in blue/purple or red. Cheers, Max @ConElPueblo beat me to it, +1 what he said
Suh-weet. It seems then I may have gotten my hands on a good one. The seller's original listing made it very clear the dial was original and unrestored or painted, and the case unpolished. Original crown. Here it is.
Thanks STANDY. From the looks of it then this watch may have seen very limited or no use! Unless the seller just popped on a replacement back. The back is lableled 166.067.
