Any Speedmaster Split Seconds (3540.50.00) owners among us?

In a moment of possible madness, I bid on, and won a 3540.50.00 - at what I think is a pretty reasonable price for a full set.

Turns out the seller lurked here for a little bit, and was advised to get it serviced, as it has yet to see the inside of a watchmakers since it was produced... this scared him enough to put it up for sale it would seem.

Spoken to Simon at STS this morning, and the costs aren't nuts (thankfully).

Just wondered if anyone else has one of these, and if so, thoughts?

    Good/Bad/Indifferent.

Rattrapante? Interesting complication but not sure the X-33 style case really works with that dial, though I like both the case and dial independently, just not necessarily on the same watch! I bet is is pretty heavy being in steel.

Is the movement 7750 derived or something more exotic?

    Bless you. :D

It's a real marmite thing - Fratello have had it as the Speedy Tuesday watch twice... and even RJ doesn't seem sure if it works.

Not sure on the weight... it arrives tomorrow - it can't be as heavy as the MKIII Speedmaster though...

That it is... apparently it was supposed to have an in-house that they couldn't deliver on - so it has a heavily modified chronometer grade 7750 base.

Cool, and not a bad thing for all that, as you suggest it means that the likes of STS can work on it without any issues. I know from personal experience that STS draw the line at things like the 3313 Co-ax or X-33 1666 movements and insist those go direct to Omega.

It seems from your posts that you are a prolific collector so this is probably a nice one to have for the sake of its quirkiness. Maybe not for everyone but interesting all the same. It was exactly this kind of excuse I made to myself when I picked up my Omegamatic and SM120m multifunction pieces, i.e. the chances of bumping into anyone wearing one is slim to none!

Very cool piece. I had one a bunch of years ago....NOS from an AD that was closing shop. I wanted it to complement my x-33, but WAAY too heavy in comparison, so it ended up sitting and then traded. It does wear tall and heavy but I haven't worn a MKIII so no idea there. Have fun with it!

I breathed a sigh of relief when Simon said they could do it - looking at their service records, they've serviced 4 of them... total.

The X-33 and 1665 multifunctions are a different kettle of fish, in that they just switch out the whole movement... apparently much, much more cost effective! :)

Still trying to move on my x-33... just not gelling with it enough no matter how hard I try.

Liked the way the style transfered to this... but the weight issue could be interesting... ::facepalm1::

The MKIII was like wearing a wrist weight... a very unbalanced wrist weight! :cautious:

Yep already had that conversation with Simon as I also have a X-33 Gen 2, OSC or nothing with those for movement swaps . They did however rather helpfully agree to refurb my 1665 SM120m multifunction back to showroom spec, restore waterproofness and replace the knackered bracelet clasp on the understanding that they couldn't/wouldn't touch the movement. Fine by me! Can't speak highly enough of them.

Wasn't it only yesterday you copied Fratello's review of this watch. Was that to see what people thought. Actually I read the review and I am with you. Maybe its not popular but I think it looks great. On my list....
If you hadn't posted, I probably wouldn't have considered or even know about it.
    Cheers.

No idea what it looks like in the flesh but the dial looks a little busy. It is really hard to know if you like a watch before you try. I wish there was some kind of watch trying service for older/vintage watches.

I looked at a lot of pictures of these... and I think it looks more matt in the metal, than the Omega studio lit pictures suggest... we shall see.

Know exactly what you mean though!

I always liked these - seems like a nice option for those of us that prefer the feel of steel to titanium but appreciate the look of the X33. I like the hands too, they strike me as being very readable. Congrats!

I think you need the titanium bracelet too with your X-33

    Different movement.

One is a Rattrapante, and yours is a split second co axial.

The strap/bracelet isn't the issue... the x-33 just isn't me.
