Any opinions on watch subscription services?

I was thinking about getting a $25 or $100, or $250/month watch subscription. Does anybody have any experience with it? Is it a scam? Are the watches any good?

I would say they're a good way to accumulate a whole lot of junk that will ultimately end up occupying a drawer somewhere.

"For $1.00 a day you can achieve the watch variety you are looking for". "A new watch every month". Think about it!

If you're talking about subscriptions where you keep the watches you get, sensibly it is easy to realize that you are getting less than what you pay for, so I can't see it as a good value.

If you like it, go for it. of course I can't see the value in it, as there's no way to get what you're paying for.

That's an interesting question. A couple years ago I read about a company that was doing fractional ownership of high end watches, sort of like a private jet thing. Strangely I've never seen anything about it since and you'd think this Forum would surely have it on the radar if it were a "thing." As I remember, the entry price was higher, like $10,000 though.

supposedly you're getting watches $50-$150 every month for the $25 subscription. For $250 you get $500-$1500 every month

I have some swamp land in Florida that we should discuss when you have a moment. Fantastic investment opportunity!

No, this is one of the new trend of subscription services like Birchbox or whatnot, where you keep what they send you

I agree, it sounds like you'll end up with a pile of worthless junk fashion watches - there may be something interesting at the higher tier, but I still doubt it'd be anything you'd want to keep for a long time

The fun part of owning a watch is OWNING a watch. This seems pointless from my perspective, but this could be just me.

If you're somewhat new to watches, your tastes will inevitably change. But, why blow money needlessly when you can spend that money on more watches? :D

If you're willing and able to even slightly hustle, take the $3k a year that you'd spend on this service and observe two threads/forums here on OF:

    1) The WRUW Today thread, to see what catches your eye; and,
    2) The sales threads, to see what's available.

Negotiate and buy a watch that you like. Wear it. Save some more money in the interim and keep checking out other members' watches. If you want something else, sell the one you bought here on the forum for, likely, close to what you paid for it. Buy something else you like.

Rinse and repeat. This way, rather than having either 10 junky watches, or wearing someone else's watches for a year and having nothing to show at the end, you get to wear watches you like, and retain most of your money.

But, do as you want to do - this is just my $0.02.

I tell you what, give me the money, and I'll send you 1 cool vintage a month. At the end of a year you will have some cool shit instead of a pile of shit.

I've never heard of such a thing. But I'm not surprised at any "business" venture any more. I think I'd skip it and just save up for the few watches I'd really like to have.
