Any Issues With a Vintage Omega?

Hi Omega Forums Members,

I'm a novice collector. Can the experts of the forum let me know if they see any red flags for this potential purchase? It's a ref 2640 with a 283 caliber and SS screw-in casebook, which seems to be the correct combo per the Omega DB. Seller states watch has been serviced and comes with a 1 yr warranty.

Here's my simple take. Case looks pretty good with minimal polishing. Signed crown could be original based on photos of similar period ref watches that I've seen from reputable sellers. The movement looks pretty clean. Dial does not appear to be retouched. Sweep second hand finish has deteriorated though.

What do you think? Am I missing any condition issues?

Thanks to the forum for any/all input.

It looks like an honest watch to me. The lugs have been polished. Top right lug slightly more than the others but nothing crazy. Let's see what the experts have to say.

Top right lug more polished ? What gives it away ?

Sweep hand can be replaced. OEM or generic

Real question. Whats the asking price?

Nice clean watch, a great starter. You're not likely to notice the second hand with it on your wrist.

As noted comes down to price, recent service and warranty are a plus.

Thanks everyone and apologize, seems I have some duplicate photos in the post. Not sure what happened there.

Good question on price. It's $1000USD. I recognize that I will pay a premium from a dealer. I'm OK with that (time v. price thing) so long as markup is reasonable and watch is in above average condition. Given this one comes with a service and looks decent, was thinking the price is in the zone of acceptable for me.

I like the watch, I am not sure of the price though. I would say it has a 35% mark up (as you would expect from a dealer)

$1000 even from a dealer seems excessive.

I like the watch. As noted, the price includes a hefty mark-up, but that's really your decision. With patience you can find one a good bit less expensive, but maybe the price is not so bad including the service, since it removes a fair amount of risk about what might be encountered in an unserviced watch. It's easy to say that it's a $400 watch with a $300 service, but if your watchmaker runs into problems, the cost of repairs can go way up. And people who make risky buys on old unserviced watches and fix them up deserve to make a profit IMO. If the watch is serviced, hopefully it comes with a substantial written warranty, e.g. 6 months or one year.

Hi Dan ... thanks for weighing in. I've read a number of your posts and value your opinion. The Seller has been favorably mentioned in OF and has a multi-decade watch repair business. The written warranty is 1 year, although I'd have to deal with the hassle of shipping if I have an issue.

My logic on price was similar to what you laid out. Recognizing this is a personal choice, I'm OK overpaying by $200-$300 v. buying an unknown service history watch that I then take to my local watchmaker for a service. Embedded in that over payment is not only the cost of my time searching and scrutinizing posts/pics for condition, researching sellers, etc. for a comparable watch but also a risk shifting premium against something unknown turning up when I go to my watchmaker.
