Forgive my ignorance (this sorta thing isn't typically allowed where I live, although I know we have professional hunters to regulate wildlife) but does hunting season mean you can shoot any number of deer? And are there designated areas where you can hunt? I'm not judging by the way - just looking to learn.

In Aus where I am we have seasons and heaps of rules that are attached to the permits you need for each season and each animal. ie) it's a 12 week geese season at the moment with 7 a day on crown land only. Only 2300 or so permits issued this year with 125 million odd magpie geese this time of the year ( and no one goes out everyday of the week )

Most hunting seasons are well regulated.

( feral pigs it's as many as you can get )

In the US hunting big game, such as deer, is highly regulated. Season dates and number of animals taken, the sex of animals, age, etc. is regulated as well; and each animal most be accounted for and registered with authorities.
Hunting gear (generally riles) is also regulated as is number of rounds chambered and types of guns.

Small game hunting (squirrels ) is also tightly regulated.
In some regions hunting of what are considered pest animals (hogs) may or may not be regulated.

Hunting of game birds is also very tightly controlled.

Shooting almost all migratory birds and all raptors is strictly prohibited.

Not just feral pigs in QLD, there's a laundry list of pests both big and small you can shoot all year around without a permit, sadly we introduced far too many of them from Europe and no amount of hunting could ever kill them all off.

It's not done with a gun, but it is a science and the results can be mighty tasty.

You'll notice that I often wear the same shirt & hat when striped bass fishing. Don't mess with success!

.....but fishermen aren't superstitious. Not at all! :p

Within the shooting sports and firearms collecting hobbies, I love rifles best of all and view hunting and an seasonal extension of playing with rifles all year long. A goodly number of rifles are in the firearms menagerie here and being a fan of all things from yesteryear, a lot of them are vintage, even the "usin' " guns. I admire the pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 rifle. Here's my favorite long-time "go-to" big game rifle, a 1953 vintage Winchester Model 70 .30-06. Deer hunting began last weekend here in Texas. I don't see my schedule allowing me to go though until the last week of the month. It's our place so I'm not required to elbow my way in with other hunters.

This Winchester Model 1892 .32-20 saddle-ring-carbine was produced in 1896. It still sees trips afield after small game and is a special favorite. It's only one example of John M. Browning's many excellent firearms designs, still serving after 120 years.

First "deer rifle." The first two deer I ever took were with this Smith Corona mfg'd Model 1903-A3 in the fall of 1975, right after I acquired it. I'm thinking of dusting it off and carrying it on a hunt this year, just out of nostalgia.

My favorite shotgun for field use is this Winchester Model 12 Skeet Grade 12 gauge that I acquired from the original owner who special ordered it in 1941, complete with a factory-provided Cutts Compensator. A rare factory option to appear on the Model 12, it negatively impacts its collectible value to some extent.

Duck hunting's my favorite hunting pursuit. This is a cove on our old family place.

Favorite hunting watch, this Glycine has been a field companion for most of my adult life. I finally had the lume redone this year since the original lume had crumbled and dissolved so badly.

    Nice Winchesters

I enjoy most of the shooting sports. From pistols, rifles and shotguns. This years deer season the hunting party will be friends and family. My Son and Grandson will be in on the hunt along my brother with a few nephews.
Since my grandson turned 15 years old this year. My Grandson wants to tag along and hunt with me. .

This years trip will be five days of hunting. These family hunting trips are a great way to bond with each other. I am not really a meat hunter. However I will not shoot anything that will not be used for food. I usually keep around ten pounds of the choice meat cuts and give the remainder of the meat to friends and family members.

Nothing will go to waste. We normally hunt from sun up until mid afternoon. Then it's back to the cabin or off to town for some time eating, drinking, playing cards etc. These trips are all the men in the family. We get to bond and hopefully mentor the younger generations.

The women in my family love when the men plan these hunting trips. While we are off hunting they will be in Vegas having a good time doing whatever they do. The women are leaving on the 15th and will return on the 20th so these mini vacations work out well for everyone concerned.
