Hi all.
I’m really getting into the vintage watches, particularly omega at the moment. I’m not at all an expert, but I’ve always appreciated watches in general for a long time due to my dad being quite an avid fan. I recently bought a vintage seamaster and had it taken to a local watch specialist who deals with many luxury brands, he thankfully confirmed he was happy it all looked in order and was a clean example apart from the strap and potentially the lens which I’m guessing is common in watches of a certain age. Since then I have got the bug and I’m already finding myself eyeing up other watches, I’m particularly taken by the crosshair dial (not sure why just like them) and I’ve found one that caught my eye. I was a little unsure about the raised wording of omega but I’ve checked various articles etc and there are a few others about. Any help on checking out the attached would be helpful and much appreciated. As the watch isn’t mine I can only give the images supplied and the seller reports the watch was serviced in 2019 but he doesn’t have any means of removing the case back??? Might be totally genuine but obviously that’s not a good start. I think it may have been slightly over polished possibly!!?? Also which case back is this? Thanks in advance.

Hello, and welcome to the forum and to the "hobby"!

From the outside, case seems sharp, the dial is not very clear, would need better pictures, but seems clean.

For better assistance from the Forum Gods, pictures from the movement and internal case back.

Hi.

thanks. Yes I do see where your coming from with the images, they could be better. These are some additional images I had sent and unfortunately the guy doesn’t know how to remove the case back he’s been very helpful in answering questions and doesn’t seem to be avoiding engaging in any conversation. I just thought it was worth popping on the forum as some guys on here could potentially see things that I wouldn’t, even with sub standard images.
Thanks again for your help.

Don't ask him to remove the case back because there is no case back on that model. Only thing he can do is take good photos of the dial after moving the hands away from the scripts.

Hi. Thanks. I haven’t insisted he remove it as I wasn’t sure myself which it was. Is it an open from the front front loader?? This is all helpful as I’m also learning a lot from asking you guys questions.

Looks legit. If you like it, and it's cheap, just buy it and figure out the details later. Don't ask too many questions and tick the seller off.

I am not an expert but the dial looks legit to me: scripts look good, crosshair is the correct thickness and correctly placed, seconds track is well spaced. I would buy it if the price is correct as the case looks good too.

Just go for it if price is good for you... Keep in mind any servicing if you'll wear it daily

As others have said, it looks good. It would help if you share the price though. What is good at $500 may not be that great at $1000. (Edit: this is just a general comment and not specifically about your watch)

Thanks folks. I have a small number of other watches some more modern watches but I’m wanting to build on and start a small collection. The benefit of being able to get others opinions, of which are by far superior to my knowledge is a real bonus in this process, and appreciated.
Thanks all.

The price is £350 which I’m reasonably happy with.

I too am a big crosshair fan and that looks like a lovely example! The lugs look very crisp so certainly no indication of excessive polishing. Sounds like a good score at that price!

That looks to me like a 14745 in pretty good condition and all original including the crystal. A nice watch ca. 1960, almost certainly with the 552 movement and £350 is definitely the good end price-wise. Well worth getting if you like it but allow another £150-ish for a service.

I'm still pretty new at this and I too am on the hunt for my first vintage Omega. The forums here are invaluable!

I was under the impression that the more angular S in the Seamaster logo was pre cal-552? Or was there a bit of a transition period where both were used?

The angled "coathanger" S was phased out in the early to mid 60's, but I'm not sure when. There definitely would be overlap with the 550/552
