Listen to the comments made by the owner and the appraiser regarding servicing by Rolex and their position on spare parts. Nothing we didn't know, but nice to hear in a general public setting.

Let's play a game. Try to name the price before you view the video.

I predicted the appraisal to a range and nailed it on the higher figure.

    Let's see how you do.

    You're on the honor system.

I’m gonna say the estimate was low - untamperd Tiffany (absolutely period correct font by the way... ) + 1.5 owner watch + hotness of Pepsi GMTs = more $ ... I’m glad awful suit guy had somewhat of a clue, but I think he’s still on the low side.

Note that the show was taped last summer. If you asked him today it might very well be higher, based on recent auctions.

Best part is that it was a gift from his uncle.

Thanks for sharing. At least the Rolex dealer had the sense to tell the man up front that there is a downside to Rolex servicing the watch.

Why don't I ever sit next to men like him on a plane? Best I have seen in the wild is a 70's 5513 on my dentist a few years back.

    The owner had great intuition.

Hey! I made it on TV! Kinda...In the background...
I had an earlier GMT on, but not interesting because no Tiffany or underline.
I had my circa 1925 Sterling Silver Walter Hagen putter for appraisal, which was rather uninteresting to the experts.
Peter was rather excited about this watch.

Me too. Dummy me thought with it's "crazed" dial it would have been more valuable and the appraiser told the owner had his watch had a nice shinny original dial instead of it's original "crazed" dial it would be even more valuable. I guess I just don't know enough about vintage Rolex as I thought the "crazed" dial would have similar value as a "tropical" dial has for Speedmasters. DA????

The dial was aged...defiantly worth less than a perfect dial. A true tropical dial has aged brown due to a flaw in the paint...this was not a tropical dial.

Thank you for helping me with this. Obviously I was under the impression that Rolex "crazed" dials were some sort of "tropical" dials.

"crazed" generally means fine cracks in the finish or in the crystal...defiantly not something that adds value.
I didnt hear him use that term...you sure he wasnt referring to the crystal?

Regardless its not a desirable feature. The dial on the Roadshow watch had spotting on the finish...it was not very attractive, and would lower the value significantly over a perfect dial.

Maybe on a $400 run of the mill Seamaster from the 60's but not on this Rolex!

To me, an ugly watch. I don’t think it has aged well. And, on that basis, I am astonished to learn the estimate. I shudder to think what the same watch, in excellent condition would be worth.

I think its ugly too..I'd never spend that kind of money for this watch. Then again that roached out Tudor that sold for $100K a few years back,,,don't get that either. Its so interesting how what what is considered acceptable spruce up on some brands is verboten on others.

The original link wouldn't work for me, I guess due to being out of the US. Anyway I found the whole episode on youtube. The Rolex starts at 46:26. Might help others for whom the original link doesn't allow the media to play.

Once again I stand corrected. The appraiser never used the term "crazed". He described this ugly dial as a "guilt"dial.

Gilt ... means reverse printing over bare metal in the case of Rolex.
