Anti-magnetism check for METIS certified watches

Hi all,
The Omega website mentions placing a magnet beside a master chronometer certified watch to prove its authenticity. If you place a magnet beside the watch, it will stop moving, right? Secondly, has anyone done this with their watch to check for authenticity on pre-owned watches? Also, wondering if the super clones have anti-magnetism capabilities these days?

A magnet will not always stop a running watch. A super magnet might but not 100% it will. It will greatly affect the running of the watch! You might even see the hairspring sticking if you have magnification. As for super clones i am not sure. A lot of the antimagnetic properties come from the silicium hairspring and the type of steel they use.

There are better ways! Have you bought, or are you thinking about buying?

I am not in the market at this point. I am fortunate and I am a watchmaker by trade. So I have the ability to open and take a close look. There are some people that can tell by looking from a distance. But not me. I open them, look really close, check time, check water resistance.

Most of the newer products have silicum hairsprings. So with magnification you could look for that. It has a grey/gun metal appearance. I have clients that come in and we check their watches they have bought used. That way they can return them if something is fishy.

Yes - I have bought a speedy SS using Chrono24 from a dealer (lots of good reviews and has been in the business for a while), so I have 14 days to return. Yet - it is still possible for a super clone to make it through - I guess this is the risk you take when buying pre-owned.

Like your suggestion - I will take it to a local dealer to have the once over for peace of mind. With the clones being so close to the original - I agree with Ticktockdoc that it will need to be opened and examined to know for certain. I have the METIS certificate that I can verify off the omega website (I guess that could be cloned as well...) - although I am guessing that is quite unlikely.

I do think it is strange to have the advice on the Omega website as a test of authenticity if no one follows it.

Are there super clone Speedy's?
I don’t think so. And I’m pretty sure if there are they aren’t anti-magnetic. I remember Fratello did a video about a Seamaster super clone and the magnet test was one of the ways to tell it apart.
