I watched this sell for $10,100, with four people bidding $9000 or more. Not a bad watch, but a wearable example, so I am surprised at the strong interest. Also as a -6, it is surely slightly less desirable than a -1 or -2. It is these early examples that up to now break $10,000 with a BASE 1000 bezel. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/INCREDIBLY-RARE-VINTAGE-1961-OMEGA-SPEEDMASTER-WATCH-Original-PRE-MOON-321-Mvmt-/371154834101?nma=true&si=mSlCCgqOC6rFGlHj1Aeg5X0cFZ4%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network Sellers image I liked the look of it. A nice dial, correct bezel. Obviously issues with the lume but otherwise good.
I watched this one too and thought it was a nice example. High but reasonable money when compared with a few others floating out there for sale.
Life is strange: in the Eighties I remember several 2998 sent in for overhauling and never collected after estimate. And most were in far better conditions than this one.
I have to admit that I was the one who bought the above watch (and yes, like the watch, I do pre-date the 1980's). Realise the watch wasn't a bargain at $10k, but the lume on the hand notwithstanding, the condition looked pretty good. On the upside - for all you 2998 owners I may have marginally increased the value of your watches (sincere apologies to aspiring 2998 owners). RCAF Buster - a fellow Canuck! Me too (Vancouver).
No, this is a collectors forum. And collectors, rightfully, pay attention to aspects that a watchmaker would not consider. We were taught to regard a watch as a mechanical piece for timekeeping. It had to be precise and reliable. In this respect a 145.012 is far better than an early CK2998: tritium vs radium dial, modernized movement (more accurate, greater power reserve), improved water resistance and so on. For a collector, of course, this is not the case for the simple reason that there are more 145.012 around than CK2998. And this is legitimate.
Well: I see a lot of the 'big' Rolexguys with 2998's on their Instagram. And if that guys come to a party the prices go up fast.
When you consider the price of a junk grade hand-wound Daytona, 2998s are bargain level watches really.
Hi Mozambique, Congrats on a very nice addition to your collection. I call Calgary home but reside in Sydney. Cheers Canucks
Don't forget there were four bidders over $9000 so the value is market in my opinion. i suspect the watch looks better in the metal. i look forward to "home" photos!
