Quite a few of these grey dials seem to show damage to either the plots or the dial itself. Possibly a result of poor storage having never been installed on a watch? After all, isn't the general consensus that were service or special request dials?

Edit: Having said that. The mark on the chrono seconds sub dial, looks like it was possibly caused by contact with a rusting hand, suggesting this dial might have previously been fitted to a watch for a long period of time.

Yes most have damage, and these grey dials are not the same as the sunburst blue-grey

The paint on these dials is very very thin and seems to chip away on its own accord on the edges/extremities or in this case even where the plexi reflector ring has touched it. Finding one is hard, finding a perfect one is even harder so I think this will go quite well.
If I had the money to throw around I wouldn't mind it in the parts cupboard.
I will have a bid but I doubt it will be in my price range.
    Cheers Michael

I was discussing the 'moss' on this with a fellow member the other day-I decided the tritium had brought the markers to life-they're alive I tell you! THAT's what you're paying for-a new LIFEFORM!!

I just don't see the appeal of this dial at all. I guess someone will buy it, have it restored, put it in a 2998 and resell the watch for $20k to someone who doesn't know any better. Do Rolex guys pay this money for a haggard looking Sub dial from 1960?

    Real Crappy 2998 Dial $2,400.00
    Fake Crappy 2998 Dial $. 2.88

I think the Fake Crappy is almost 100 times worse.

In the UK we would term that a 'fake bake' a kind of a spray on tan look.
It has a certain appeal....I think....my wife used to like that shade in the 80's on a Friday night.

Perhaps this chocolate fades to pale grey/white on a Monday morning???

yeah that spray on tan fake dial is pretty nasty.

I'm surprised that this dial went so high, quite poor condition for $1050

Despite the condition issues and not being blue, it still ended up at $5,200 - reflecting the rarity and desirability of these dials.

I'm just about to collect my 105.002 with a grey dial from STS and will post Simon Freese's excellent pictures of the job he has done in a new thread.

These grey Speedmasters look much more attractive in person than in images, but I appreciate that they are not everyone's cup of tea..
