Someone posting on a watch forum, knowing the model name and the serial number doesn't know how to google that information and check the results?

I've seen this movie before and the end is not good...

The model name is printed on the dial, the serial is probably on the back (on these, I don't know) and the UG dating charts are all over the internet.

I do think the OP over there is a bit lazy. He is looking for pricing opinions, but WuS doesn't allow it.

Everybody able to type on google what's written on dial knows that has a valuable watch in hands, note how he photographed, with quality, the parts of the watch that matter. He even knows that pushers for that watch will be hard to find, this is not possible to know without some research.

I'm not saying that don't have the watch or is a scammer, just saying that he's not telling all the truth.

Oh, I think he knows what he has. Might even be a picker or dealer.

He just doesn't know what it's really worth and wants someone else to do his leg work. Like I said, lazy.

    Not going to be me.

that post is way too suss if you ask me. "i don't know much", "local swiss dealer" "what I know" give me a break. the guy knows what he has. If you didn't know about watches why would you know to take a photo of the movement.

True. The fact that he/she got the caseback off tells me it isn't a completely newbie.

Bogus he said he took it to a local AD. They'd know instantly. Probably gave him a low ball offer. Anyway here's a yard sale ethics dilemma:

If you found this on a folding table at a yard sale for $20 or 20 Euro, would you actually buy it knowing full well what it was worth without informing the family / charity of what they had? I often wonder what I'd do. I suspect I'd seize the day but feel guilty afterword.

Under your scenario I would purchase the item in a heart beat. IMHO it is not the buyers duty to inform the seller as to value. I would pay the asking price and move along

Knowledge is king. I remember reading a few threads back about someone buying an antique - the seller was happy to part with it for ~$80, and the buyer was full aware it was worth ~$500 or thereabouts.

I agree totally, if something has a price card attached then to me that means the seller has had opportunity enough to adequately consider pricing.

The grey area is only when the seller has no idea of value and asks the potential buyer what they think and to make a reasonable offer.

OK, this is BS. What novice has the tools and the wherewithal to open the case, take macro pics, post, go to a "SWISS TIME" blah blah blah

It's easy to say you'd snap up that deal in a contextless situation. In my garage sale-ing experience, most families who put them on were poor and needed to do so to make a little extra cash. I would feel terrible to buy a watch worth enough money to financially support them for 1/3 of a year or pay for their kid's education.

Yeah - of course they're ignorant. It's just an old watch. Is that enough to put you in the right? There's no right answer. But there is a moral one, considering one situation to another.
