Every now and then i like to trawl eBay, it’s like the watch equivalent of skip (dumpster) diving... so this time, one grainy shot of some watches, £150 and here’s what I found when 4kg of watches turned up in a shoe box on Sunday... The “good” A couple of modern new boxed Rotary watches, Chronos and divers. They went onto the present list for upcoming relatives birthdays (not ones I’m close to, but still have to get a present for). This one I kept - a large modern-ish Citizen Auto field watch, which looks good as a beater on a suede strap: There was also a vintage 1950s pocket watch I gave to my watchmaker...So far then, I’ve made a bit more than my money back so I’m happy. The “Bad” Some really terrible fake Breitlings and one Rolex Explorer. The Explorer was actually quite a good case and bracelet copy. What was depressing was the effort that had gone into it - the same effort could have been used to make a genuine new micro brand.. So they get hit with a hammer and put in the rubbish... The “ugly” Finally the rest - half of which are junk/broken and put in the rubbish bin straight away. The rest are mostly quartz, some autos, and mostly fashion branded... Off to the local Cubs/Scouts charity shop where the manager says she’ll put them on sale for £10-15 each so hopefully they will get some nice extra funds for new camping equipment ... So not as great as my last eBay find and sadly no surprise A486, Speedies it UGs hidden away, but not bad fun for £150 and something to do on a rainy Sunday...
Maybe I should have kept it for my winning entry to the “OF Tackiest watch 2018” entry... I did feel morally dubious about dropping it off, but they didn’t seem to mind...:
Sandoz, Henri Sandoz. Same band as brands like vintage Rotary, entry level Enicar/Rado, Titoni etc Should go for £30
