Hi All, I have found a nice listing on Omega Constellation Cal. 551, ref. 14381 61 SC. What do you think about it? I particularly wanted to find out what you think about the dial. I like the fact that the Seller did not overpolish the bezel - overall he seems to be really trustworthy so I actually look forward to the purchase. Thanks!
Dial seems ok .... But ... Having been through a few Connies myself I'd prefer to see some (more) stars on the caseback.
I see "T"s on the dial, but no lume.... also the gold seems to extend off the lugs onto the case, as if the whole case was plated but the plate was polished off the body up to the lugs........suspicious stuff never mind that polished to death back..... although the movement looks decent, it looks like its had a long hard life, unless its cheap I'd walk
I think you and I must have different views on polishing because to me the bezel and lugs have been fairly heavily worn/polished. Also I believe that The T's should not appear on a 1961 watch
I guess I got excited about the fact that it's not that polished compared to other listings... Thanks for all the remarks. According to Omega site, this ref no. should refer to a pie-pan dial so this already caught my eye... And you're right about the stars ! Any other comments are welcome.
Remember the pictures on the Omega vintage site are not indicative of a specified dial, merely an example of one of the dials that may have be available The watch was polished beyond death. Dial is refinished.
This watch IMHO is a no go. Very overpolished, especially the bezel and case back. Wrong crown too. The 14381 ref had both dome and piepan dials, if you found your info on the Omega site there are many discrepancies there. The OP´s watch has lume in both the hands and markers. Here is a 14381 that I used to own, this one is solid gold with onyx markers. The bezel and case, although not perfect, are in much better shape and I would be looking for a watch in this kind of condition if I was in the market for a 14381 which are not so difficult to find.
It looks like there is lume on both the hands and dial but it may or may not be original. The watch appears to have undergone some treatment or another and it's possible they did a vintage style relume. Regardless the case back especially is a little too worn down for my tastes.
I can't see a redial from the fonts but agree the Ts are a bit odd for that period (The lume is there) EDIT: Oops - I've just looked at my own -fonts on OP watch have no serifs -nicely done though for a redial should always trust the masters.... Agree with the rest has been said - you can definitely find better - just need patience As for the @Christos watch - it is stunning my gold faced version
Here's mine, gold-capped as well: It's NOT on my wrist, but on L'American, as it hasn't yet cleared customs I'll be honest and admit that apart from the "T's" on the dial, I can't really see anything wrong with it
Not sure what you mean? I know that the markers are on mine have onyx inlay and that the one in the OP are luminescent - I was referring to "T SWISS MADE T" being out of place on a 1961 watch as mentioned a few times earlier.
Minute markers, gotcha They are slightly longer/varying thickness? I don't think I'd pick up on that, especially if I hadn't seen close-up shots. As no-one has posted a lumed dial, here's one I googled my way to:
That's been educative.... now I'm sure I will look for your advice before I make my mind on buying any vintage Omega whatsoever And thanks for reference pictures, now I see how terrible the overpolish on caseback actually is.
