Hi - looking for some advice. I recently put a golden brown Hirsch duke 'alligator look' leather strap on a stainless and gold watch. I went cow because I felt a bit weird about real alligator and I wasn't sure the colour would work. It does, I love the colour, but hate the texture, so im thinking about a real one. Two questions - is there any difference on terms of ethics between cow and reptile? Second, what's the difference between alligator and crocodile? Thanks in advance.

The difference really depends on where the skin is taken from. Both croc and gator have a similar look to me. Both have similar grains. You'll notice that the real stuff has more fine texture since the fake is only made by pressing the pattern into leather.

    aesthetics

...... and personally, I have no issue with killing something that would kill me first if it had the chance - as long as most of the animal is used for a purpose more than a trophy.

Coming from one of the few places in the world that is native habitat to both gators and crocs...

    1. I don't see any ethical problem with watchbands made from either. After all, these are farm animals, raised for the hides and meat. No different than cattle.

    2. The main difference between them is that crocodiles are so mean, the alligators are scared of them.

In the wild, the crocs are truly an endangered species, while there isn't a body of water larger than a puddle that isn't part of an alligator's territory. We consider them nuisances. Years ago, when an alligator was captured, they relocated them to the Everglades. Now they just become, well, watchbands.

    Go for the gator,

Actually, "esthetics" is an acceptable spelling in the U.S. We are too pragmatic for all those darn Greek diphthongs, and I don't want to hear any juvenile jokes about girls going for dips in thongs, neither. :)

    Regards,
    Jon

Can we make jokes about girls going for a dip without thongs then?

Sure, that would be fine. While you are at it, tell me about your Playboy connections.

dunno about croc's being endangered.... you need to read the NT Times. It would appear that every home has 2.3 croc's per kid.

as Dennis said. It all depends on where on the skin the strap is taken from.
