Watches with inscriptions are apparently polarizing to collectors. I personally enjoy them, but collectors can and do argue that they're modifications that detract from the collectibility/value (if there's any distinction to be made there) of the watch. Some go as far as removing inscriptions from vintage watches, which I don't understand at all. In any case, the fact that some collectors avoid engraved watches can be an advantage for the rest of us.

I like them to. Adds to the story of a watch in my opinion. There is a pretty good Wilkipedia page on this guy and he lead quite an interesting life before dying in 1987. It would have been cool to own his watch.

He was. Is there anything obviously wrong with the watch? I expected this to fly ( excuse the pun). Quartz military seikos fetched big prices in this auction.
I watched the SAS auction as well - there were a lot of military watches in there so maybe it got lost in the crowd? The Seiko military chronographs from the 1980s are still cheap compared to the mechanical ones from the 1970s.
