    Hi everyone!

Let me begin by saying that I am completely new to the world of fine timepieces. I'm hoping to buy a modest "starter" watch for my boyfriend (hoping to spend under $500).

I know he loves the Omega Seamaster Deville, and yes, the only reason I know that is because we were watching Mad Men and he commented. It seems as if you can find nice vintage Devilles for under $1000, but that it takes patience and knowledge to avoid fakes and frankenwatches. Am I better off just buying a new lower-end watch this year and saving the real deal for next year, once I have more time, money and knowledge to work with? He's not a huge watch guy and I don't think he'll ever collect, but I do want to get him something nice.

This is the dream item, but this is what I'm afraid I'll have to settle for. Is there anything in the middle?

I found several Seamaster Devilles on ebay, but I'm worried I just don't know enough to make a good decision:

My apologies if this is a dumb question. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

You say your boyfriend doesn't have collecting aspirations.
Maybe a refurbished Omega with a quality repainted dial
    might work for you.
This seller puts out a nice product for what he
    sells. Mostly completely refurbished Omegas.
Some of the dials are even original.
He offers a nice warranty also.
Try messaging him on eBay and tell him
what you are looking for. Maybe he has something
    that will work for you.

    Why not? Wasn't Draper's Deville a redial?

This one looks original to me.

Here's another nice one from the same seller:

However, there are still 5+ days to go in the auction, so the price will go higher. Probably over the $500 limit at the end.

Stuff in the UK is usually way more expensive than here.

Thank you so much for your responses! I very much appreciate the input. Gatorcpa, I messaged the seller you suggested and I hope he'll get back to me. Pitpro, thank you for your advice. I think a refurbished Omega with a quality repainted dial would make my boyfriend very happy. I'm on the hunt!

Having read the whole thread and knowing this is a thread from "a Clueless Beginner" just thought it should be pointed out since just the link was posted and nothing else.:) Just looking out for the newbies.
