Advice & Thoughts on Unique Omega Constellation Sterling Box?

    Dear Forum Members:

I would be interested in comments as to this unique Omega sterling box that I bid on (and lost) through eBay. The final hammer price was an astounding price in the mid $700 and a little bit over -- and I think one of the higher prices attained for an Omega sterling box. I believed the piece to be quite rare and still do. I was attracted by the different 'pouncing' on the top lid cover, the unusual Sterling 950 mark instead of the usual 925, and of course the insides of the case with the various Omega scripts and matching tray. I have never seen anything like this type of box ever. I do collect Omega Centenary boxes but this box is not of that type.

What do we have here? Is this a rare box? Does it warrant such a high price and why? Also, what model Constellation would this box be specifically for?

Ronnie I believe this is a later box then the shallow casket shape of of the De Luxe gold Constellations (as illustrated here in another thread recently) or the smooth box similar one for the Centenary.

But beyond that I too wish I knew more. The sale of the one you have pictured is the first detailed image I have seen of this. Perhaps Hoi or George (Kringkily) has seen this before.

Here is a different Silver Constellation box from the one depicted in your sale, this may be the one in the Blue Ad.

No I believe this is a very different box. It may be De Luxe or Grand Luxe, but later, after the caskets as Omega calls them.

Lately a bewildering array of these Silver Omega Boxes have been showing up. I don't know if anyone has a complete handle on them, but we do seem to be learning a little more of late. One thing for sure, Omega made more variety of these than most people realized.

The top is a hammered finish, done with a ball-pein hammer (round end, of course). Very popular for pewter (mugs) and copper (jugs and vases) immediately post WW II and prior.

Assuming the box set for the second box <edit: that I posted images of >, are correct, the serial number would place that Silver Box at about 1960.

I was contacted by the winning bidder and I told him that this box was a mystery to me. I've never seen one quite like it, although it certainly looks authentic based on the printing inside and the type of insert.

My guess is that it is from the very early 1960's. It probably held an early 2nd generation model like Steve's, and is from a country where 0.950 is the standard for sterling silver. This would likely eliminate the US (0.900) and UK (0.925).

    France or West Germany maybe?

Good hypothesis Gator. I have seen images of the box type with the hammered top like Ronnie's post before, but only poor ones showing part of the front so it is certainly not one off and likely genuine Omega as you state.

No clue there either, but I would not pay more than the going rate for the more conventional silver boxes.

However, given the current prices for the conventional silver boxes in reasonable shape seem to be running at least 400-500 USD, 750 USD is probably not too unreasonable if it is in good condition and you like it.
