Hi! New member... Long time lurker.

I am considering the purchase of a SMP with the 1109 movement. I really like the older SMPs with the waved dial but know little about the 1109 movement, or how they compare to the later 1120 and 2500 watches. I plan on getting a ceramic bezel SMP at some point but would like an early one as well.

If I come to an agreement with the seller, this will be my 2nd Omega - I recently purchased a Dennison cased beauty from a forum member.

Questions:

- thoughts on the older SMPs with the 1109 movement
- estimated value in USD - what would you pay?
- thoughts on this specific watch
- 1109 vs 1120 vs 2500 SMPs... I have a rudimentary knowledge of the movements, changes to the dial,etc... But not on problems - if any.

Any additional thoughts/comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I think $1700 is far too much for This as it will certainly need a service. I cannot speak to the reliability of the older 1109 movement compared to the 1120 but for less than what's being asked here you could get a newer 1120 wave dial SMP.

I agree with all of the above. I own a SMP with the 1120 and I am very happy with it. Bought it new from an AD in 2006 for $1675. In that price range you can find much newer watches than the one you were looking at.

for a mint 1120 powered SMP, what price range should I consider a solid band to work in… assuming good condition and correctness?

 

$1300-$2500 is the price range I have seen for the 1120 powered SMP. The 007 edition are the ones on the north end of that range. If I were in your shoes, I would contact Kringkily on the forum. Just send him a PM of what you are looking for and what your budget is. Never bought from him or dealt with him in any way. But I have read a lot of really good things about him. His prices are very competitive. I will be contacting him for my next modern Omega.

the only negatives I've read about the 1109 movement in all the years I've been a member of watch forums is a problem with the winding mechanism. having said that, I must admit that the 1109 in my seamaster has performed faultlessy and is one of the most accurate watches I have ever owned.

For what it's worth at this late stage, regarding the linked watch in the OP's initial thread. I've never been comfortable buying watches that show movement pics, unless the seller is a qualified watch mechanic.

Just my 2 cents.

 

Very interesting point. I am sure there are some very mechanically talented people out there. Very few of the talent challenged people are going to say "I opened the case back to take a picture of the watch I am selling but have no idea what I am doing… so good luck."

 

Not a big fan of that generation of SMP, I have two 1120's and love them both, they are accurate, never stop, look better and also their beatrate is higher than most 2500 movements. I have an aqua terra with the 2500C and it's nice but stopped once, and also has a lower beatrate. I say search for a 1120!!! Here are some shots for you
