I friend of mine has the chance to purchase or take in a trade this Speedy. Other than what I've gleaned from the forum and from Speedmaster101, I'm not really knowledgeable about the idiosyncracies of this model or the condition of this example. Any thoughts/advice appreciated. I've learned a lot here and would love to share some guidance with him. Thanks.
Looks ok to me. But also depends on what is being traded and/or how much the watch is being sold for. Looks to be a bit of chrono creep though....but not a huge deal. Just figure in the cost of a service.
Dial and bezel look fair to me. The case polishing is abhorrent though, which makes this a pass for me.
I quite like the dial, and the DON seems acceptable to my eyes.. I still see the facets, but a close up shot would be better. Overall, the pics are are pretty grim. Service, + closer look at the edges, and facets. All comes down to what the seller is looking for/willing to acecpt. What's the flat link - presumably a 1039?
I'm new to this serious hobby and like to learn what to look for. When I saw the case I said, "Yep, polished." The more I look at it I see that it is really heavy handed polishing.
Looks legit, with original pushers but service crown. Bracelet looks a bit stretched out and I believe the end-links are wrong for the bracelet. As @apsm100 mentioned, the case does seem to be the major negative, particularly the polishing on the sides. Personally, that would be hard for me to tolerate, but each person has their own taste.
Bezel has quite a ding at 125, screwheads could look better. The flat link bracelet looks also too stretched As pointed out it depends on the price but I think this one looks rather tired... For me it's a pass
That is a reflection of his glove. It is impossible to see how good the case is from theses photos, but i think it is ok
Extremely polished down as others have said. It's nice that the CB facets are still there, and it would probably be an OK enough wearer, but I would not be looking to spend much on this one. That flat-link bracelet is an 1175, not a 1039. With that kind of stretch I wouldn't add much value to it - but, on the flip side, it shouldn't be too difficult to have repaired since it doesn't have stretch links like a 1039 or 1506. However, I wonder about the end links which are for an 1171. I don't know how well a standard 633 end link would work with an 1175, but I suspect there's been some modification either of the end links or the final links of the bracelet in order to fit. The other bracelet looks maybe like a Holzer jubilee? I would say even with the box and bracelets, this watch should be priced less than a "good" example according to Speedmaster101
Thanks all for the responses and feedback. The assessment of the case and service parts aligned with my novice views as well. It would be a pass for me personally but would $7K-10K be decent trade value in its condition?
7 or 8k is OK, I wouldn't go for it at 9 or 10. Also, I'd be sure I was getting a good trade value for whatever I was giving up.
What's your friend trading it against? Regarding the end links, I'm pretty sure the final links of an 1175 are wider than 633 end links so the end links will likely have been filled to make the centre space slightly wider.
I think 7k is on the low end of trade value here. It's got a box set, 2 bracelets, 1 of which is probably a flatlink 1039 or a 1506. 633 endlinks incorrect but still. 7k for the head only would be a fair trade.
I'm not a dealer and I'm not in this for the money, so personally, I would only trade for something I wanted to keep. Otherwise I'd just sell my watch outright.
It's an 1175, no stretch links. In bad stretched-out condition too, not worth nearly as much as a 1039 or 1506
