    Hey guys,

I’m quite new to this so bare with me.

I have recently inherited an omega watch from my grandad who unfortunately passed away. I’m just needing a bit of advice on the enthicity of it and if anybody actually knows what I’ve got here.

I have no idea how old it is but I know it’s quite old. All I really know about it is he purchased it from a solicitor who was struggling for money. I want to say back in the 80’s but again, I’m not 100% sure. He then bought a solid gold strap for it as that was the fashion at the time but I’m certain it had a leather one originally.

If anyone knows anything about it I’d love to know. It needs a service but got quoted at an omega registered store that it would cost £700 to sort out which I thought was quite pricey. Was just wondering if that’s a fair price or not?

    Thanks.

Don’t under any circumstances let Omega touch this. They will destroy its collector and vintage value. A good watchmaker can put it right with a movement only service. As what you have I’ll leave this to the experts. I suspect a movement shot will be needed. To my eye, a lovely piece.

Great solid gold piece. Call Swiss time services if you are UK.

Get it off that bracelet it will wear the lugs. It would look great on a croc strap.

Might be a good redial look at the 7 and 10 hour markers.

The watch has Swiss gold hallmarks on the underside of the lugs, so it looks to be solid gold.

I can’t see enough to tell the purity of the gold. You’ll need to take it to a watchmaker to find that out.

Looks like a 1950’s or 1960’s manual wind Omega, possibly a caliber 283 movement.

Dial is nice and could be original.

I think £700 is a ridiculous price for a service, even by UK standards. Someone here should be able to recommend a good local watchmaker for you.

My condolences on your loss and good luck with the project.

The purity hallmark on the lug looks like a UK hallmark, so maybe a Dennison cased model...

Thanks guys I will give them a call, the watch hasn’t been worn in many years as I know my grandad used to wear it on special occasions but as he was coming to the later years of his life he didn’t really go anywhere due to illness.

From what I can tell it looks to be in really good condition he loved his watches and would always look after them.

My questions have been answered though so cheers :)

Can't be absolutely certain but that hallmark looks to me like 375, so 9ct gold and likely to be a Dennison case.

Cannot see the hallmark well enough. But this set of hands and the Omega script make me think there is a 285 or 286 inside.

Can you make out a 375 or 750 in the hallmark on the lugs? Looking at the colour of the gold it looks more like 375 (9ct).

I’ve tried to take a photo of it but unfortunately the camera on my iPhone isn’t the greatest. I don’t know if anyone else can make this out.

Think I’m just going to get someone to give it a good clean and just wear it as a dress watch. It still works perfectly fine. Tested it over the night and it kept the time pretty well until it stopped due to it being a winder.

It would be interesting to know how much it’s worth though as I have no idea on this sort of stuff.
