    Hello!

I am considering buying a quite nice Seamaster Calender gold capped, year 1960 with a cal. 505 movement.

The overall condition seems to be very good, but what is keeping me from buying it instantly, is that the gold cap has a crack on one of the lugs, as it can be seen in one of the last photos.

What do you think of that? The sellers says that its not really a problem, as the gold cap is still firmly on the case, but i have my doubts whether it at some point would fall off?
Is it something a watchmaker would be able to fix, or it is something that won't be a problem?

I really like the watch, and in terms of the danish price level on Omegas the price is really good as well! It will cost me around 515 dollars, and just to make a comparison on the price level in Denmark, a Omega Seamaster De Ville from the 60´s cost around 700 dollars.

So, what do you think? Would it be a good purchase? The clock loses about 20-30 seconds a day, but since i am only gonna use it 1-2 times a week, i dont think its gonna be in immediate need of a service, but i would like some opinions on that as well! :)

Thank you so much in advance! :)

    Best regards,
    Frederik

It is a very large problem. It appears the gold has been worn through. Is the gold missing around the case as well? It looks like the gold has been lost adjacent to the lug that has the cracked/worn gold.
Many problems with this watch, beware!.

    PS
Is the gold capping missing between the lugs as well?

BTW I am betting that is a redial. Very poor redial and the lume is gone on the indices.

Bad, bad redial. Not worth it.

505 is a non-date movement, so either the seller meant 565 or the movement is wrong. But anyway it's not a nice watch, heavily polished with as mentioned above a pretty awful redial. Look at the uneven shaky words Omega Automatic. There's a good reason why it's cheap!

Correct movement for this watch should be a cal. 503. It's the same as the non-chronometer cal. 501, except with the calendar feature.

This smells like a redialed frankenwatch to me. Unless it's sold as a parts watch for very cheap, I'd advise you to move on.

Just so you know what I think of value. If I bought that it would be for the movement, dial and hands only. Case would be tossed out due to the damage.

Wouldn't pay more than $125 and only if the movement was in nice condition

Also appears to be splitting on the other lug in last image on the inside edge.

Have you looked at the Private Sales section? There are a couple Seamaster calendars for sale.

I thank you all for your fast and detailed responses! I now know for sure that i will not be buying this watch. The help from this forum really is incredible valuable for us newcomers, who are still struggling to tell a good deal from a bad one! :)

@efauser, Yes i have seen some nice ones for sale there, unfortunately since i live in Europe the customs and taxations fees makes it very expensive to buy watches from the US.

Would this be any good to the OP? I personally can't see anything wrong with it and it seems cheap. However I could well be missing something as if it's such a good BIN deal why has it been there for four days? Also the collection only aspect is a problem - which may be why it hasn't sold.
