I bought one of these off ebay to try. They're quite inexpensive, and light is provided through a LED strip powered by a powerbank

    Some initial pictures:

I'm still not fully satisfied with the pics - they tend to have a fair bit of glare due to the lights, and the LEDs tend to give a feel that I think could be warmer. But anyway, more experimentation is in order, and I'll learn by trial and error.

And all done while wearing my trusty AT8500 :)

Maybe try using tissue paper to diffuse the light a little? And maybe different colors of the paper to make the light seem a little warmer?

How much was it if you don't mind me asking?

They're about US$10 and I've ordered one already!
were you just using a phone? Or something more high end?

As someone else has said the light reflection is there because you have to diffuse the light which for your type of light box is not very good as the light itself is weak.

Also, try using white backdrop instead of black and there should be some light bouncing off it and it might make things better.

    hi guys,
Thanks for all the tips! Really learning new things now, many thanks.

@semper_shells : there are quite a few in ebay, google "foldable light box" and they'll pop up. As @shaun hk said, they're typically ~$10.

@Jwit & @dx009 , thanks for the tips, will definitely try using different colours for diffusing the light, and a white backdrop. I'm not using any sort of high-end camera (just an iPhone 6), so I guess that one limitation. Though I suspect the biggest limiting factor is still my own photography skill!

@NT931 the pics are not bad at all  in fact, they are pretty damn good if we consider the relative low tech set up...
