While going through a pile of old threads and moving them to the Seiko forum I noticed a few photos that were rather troubling, one theme that recurred several times was taking wristshots in your car when the vehicle is clearly in motion. I’ve ignored a lot of these in the past but seeing a guy driving his car at autobahn speeds on the speedo while taking a shot of his chronograph really stood out enough to make me want to say something about it.

Wristshots are cool, cars are cool, but please either get a passenger to do it for you while you keep your focus on the road or wait until the vehicle is at a stop with the park brake on. If I see more of these I’m just going to delete them as its just really bad form and likely illegal in most places, and a lot of evidence is showing that it is comparable to drunk driving in the severity of risk.

I’m not going to name and shame but if you search for the car related threads you can see a lot of offenders, when I actually started looking I saw probably 40+ before I gave up and posted this.

A forum member brought this up several months ago and I recall the thread devolving into unproductive tit-for-tats. There are obviously strong feelings on the issue.

I agree that when it can be plainly seen a person is in the driver's seat of a moving vehicle, wrist shots are just a dim idea. But the hair splitters (myself often among them) were quick to point out that though several photos were clearly taken IN a car, it could not be substantiated that the car was in motion.

I believe the conversation then transitioned to whether such images should be barred or removed. That's when I spoke up. That approach tastes of stale censorship and the inhibition of personal freedom (even if that freedom affords the opportunity to make a bad decision).

Certainly, no sane person would encourage in-motion wrist shots and in this instance I consider myself in that 'sane' category. But if someone makes that (poor) decision, and I like the watch...I'll like the post.

Sorry for the long response. But I'm heartened to read your statement as it very obviously comes from a place of caring for others.

The ones I was referring to on IG are videos. That's obviously not an issue here, since you can't post vids.

I can understand the arguments against a nanny state if you are alone on the road. However given that you are normally surrounded by other people, IMO not a valid argument in most situations.

I’m never driving and a read of my speedo should make that clear. I do post shots from in my car with my hand on the wheel. You see I only leave my house to run errands or sit in the parking lot of my coffee shop so I get some time out of the house. I do not wear my watch at home.

    I abhor driving pictures.

This topic has come up before, and I think everyone pretty much agreed that it's a terrible idea.

This made me laugh. Like a penny in a fuse box- but people still do it.

This would never happen in a pocket watch forum

Actually Dave, your lanyard can be used to hang the pocket watch from the rear-view, so you can keep one hand on the wheel while taking your watch shot going 100mph.

Lol imagine the frustration of trying to time the shot in a pendulous state of motion when the dial is only intermittently facing you.

Yes. Pocket watch people; they're the real danger!

This reminds me of how much I loved physics in college...the pendulum, not the pocket watch people

With an open full hunter case spinning away, you’ll be fine to focus on pics since you blinded everyone around you causing them to careen off the road

That's a tactical ancillary benefit: no one left to hit!

This PSA needs an example or two, at idle of course. Cars can be a nice light box. :)

And while we’re at it, no more of those action dive watch shots, I don’t care how tough your watch is :coffee:

That’s where @STANDY got his Seiko...although he kindly waited until the shark passed it.
