This exactly. In the summer of 1990, I was one of those travellers accused in a recent OF thread of not knowing much about watches and buying a Tag Heuer at the Duty Free. It looked like a good Swiss watch to me and I gave not a toss it was quartz. It was $425 at LAX and although it was another 18 years before I bought my 2254.50, it really was my gateway piece. When I came back from my trip, a couple of my watch-loving pals were actually impressed with my choice as they knew all about Tag and Heuer. I was over the moon. How little I knew but damn I loved that watch. Still do.
I wore that Tag 1000 every day for nearly 20 years. Battery has been changed maybe twice in the 31.5 years I’ve owned it. The bracelet is badly stretched; it’s likely one inch longer than when new but I don’t care. It runs excellently but gets wrist time only on bike rides. I’ll never part with the old beast.
