I don’t wear watches for what other people think, but rather for what I know is on my wrist (or so I tell myself). So for me there is a bit of dread when someone recognizes the watch I’m wearing and asks, “Is that a Rolex?” Fortunately, living in the Pacific Northwest very few people notice or care about watches, and they almost never say anything.

A few minutes ago I was ordering a coffee at Starbucks and the young male barista said, “You have great taste in watches!” I smiled and thanked him. His female collegue overheard the exchange and asked what was special about it. The young man drew a line in the air and said, “Here’s an engagement ring.” He then drew another line much higher and said, “Here’s a gentleman’s watch.” Her eyes went wide, the toaster dinged, I gave him a nice tip and that was it.

Edit: Added wristpic as every post should have a picture!

ha i don't know if that says more about the barista, the area you live in, or the watch...

come to think of it, the few times i've had people compliment my watches they were in the service industry (baristas, restroom attendants, etc.). that certainly would be a clever way to endear oneself to ensure a nice tip!

I only ever wear vintage omega on my wrist, so if someone were to recognize what's on my wrist I would say.....what's your username?

On the subject of engagement, in some cultures it is customary for the bride to get the groom a luxury watch (often a Rolex).

Unfortunately I did not marry into such a culture.

After 20 years sometimes I still wonder if I did it right...(kidding honey if you see this)

When you're learning sales, it is said to take note of how a person is dressed...AKA check out their shoes and watch.
You'll get a good idea of how they value things and more importantly...how much they can spend!
Ths is not foolproof, obviously, but it makes things easier when they dress the part.

In modern Korean culture it's not atypical for brides/grooms or families to give watches as gifts. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/15/fashion/watches-south-korea-weddings.html
