A Tiny Lesson of Zip Code Importance

So…I purchased Spruce’s beauty of a CWC watch that he had up for sale. Now understand, I’m a stickler for what I type and generally proof what I write before hitting send. When I sent him my address I inadvertently hit a “9” instead of a “0” in the zip code when I typed it. I was in a bit of a rush and should have checked it. Alas, I didn’t.

That watch has now been from London to New York to Atlanta to Palmetto, Georgia, to Alabama, to two different locations in Mississippi, back to Atlanta, back to Palmetto, and now sits back in Mobile Alabama.

I have spoken with the postal service and attempted to correct the zip (the one I typed doesn’t even exist). We’ll see if it makes its way back to Georgia. One can only laugh about it at this point.

Moral of the story (at least to myself): check the dang address you provide. Holy smokes.

I have my fingers well and truly crossed.

That said, I once put a Brighton postcode (what we call it in the UK) instead of a Birmingham one when I sent a watch out for service

Did you file a missing mail report on the USPS website? That's one way to correct the address if you are lucky.

I did so over the phone. It should be caught and corrected at the next scan for the tracking (so they say).

It doesn't look like the lost mail registration went through. If it did, you would see it in the tracking history. I would do it again here (#3): https://www.usps.com/help/missing-mail.htm

Thank you sir! I just talked with them late this afternoon, so hopefully the latest scan has caught it.

I’m paranoid and hate typing out my address and email in the event I accidentally enter the wrong info. Specially in scenarios where I’m receiving a package or payment, so I set up this easy trick…

Using your iPhone, go to contacts and find your contact card. Should be the very top one.

In the address field(s) put in your address.

While you’re doing this, put your email into the email field as well.

Proof read it however many times you need to, and hit “done” when you’re ready.

Next time you want to send someone your address, all you have to do is type “my address is ” or “my email is ” (hit the spacebar after “is”) and you will see an option appear to autofill the info (address/email) you wish to send. This trick works from your computer as well, so long as your Apple ID is synced between them.

It’s just a small trick to ensure the info you’re sharing is the same every time. Hopefully you get your package sorted!

Watch update: it is headed back to Mississippi from Alabama. I spoke with the local post office and they are going to try to catch it as it moves through. There is no Missing Mail or Package Intercept option for this package. If some kind person doesn’t catch it and call me, it’ll be headed back to you @Spruce . Frustrating when it can’t be tagged by the tracking number as needing attention. Ultimately my fault. I just hope a damn good watch doesn’t just disappear never to be seen again.

After a 20 day journey, the CWC has arrived. It has been from here to yon and back since my last update, including going from Atlanta to Wisconsin and back to Atlanta this weekend. Worth the wait and lesson learned on checking the damn zip code. Thanks @Spruce ! Well pleased with it!
