I came across this one the other day and said to the owner that it was unfortunate the [lume] mismatch between the markers and the hands as the latter look newer/perhaps replaced at some time -- He responded that according to others who are more knowledgeable with vintage Rolex, that hands may not age the same way as the dial and cited possible reasons such as different materials or hands used by different makers.

I'm calling these newer/replaced hands - so what do you think?

The owner says is a series N, circa ~1991.

what he says is accurate, but not the case with his watch. These hands are clearly not original. You will get slight variations in color, but not drastic like this.

I am working on a project with yellow patina hands, can you ask if he can show the "others who are more knowledgeable with vintage Rolex or other watches" to see if these also colored a bit more than the dial..
    Greatly appreciated!

The hands look like aftermarket and not genuine Rolex hands to me.

To be devil's advocate here, my 1991 Explorer II has similar dial lume patina, and my hands are much lighter. I do agree on this Sub though, something seems a bit off, but the dial patina looks awesome. IMG_20160919_091512.jpg

Nice watch! Your watch/model is indeed an exception to the rule regarding plots/dial patina. As you know the predecessor (16550) had dial paint issues which turned the paint to a cream color causing Rolex to workout this defect. Who knows what happened around this time period mid-late 1980's because the "Fat Lady" also had dial defects but were not received as well as the color change of the 16550...LOL

The 16570, rarely will you find a matching set of plot/hands and when you do... you raise an eyebrow.
Case and point, see the two examples below one previously for sale by NBTimes (enough said there, a topic of many discussions in other forums..) and HQ Milton, which in IMHO the hands were redone..

I have always wondered about some of the NBTimes pieces....

Thanks for the kind words, this Explorer II is my only guilty modern pleasure!

Your modern piece is 25 yrs old, soon you will not have to feel any guilt because it will qualify as vintage.

Here's my '86 sub. Not sure if it helps, but the hands and plots match perfectly. I bought this from the original owner with full kit, so I know the service history.

When I bought it, the owner (original owner) felt guilty about the patina and offered me several sources to get it relumed. I said thanks but no thanks.

I hear ya on the surrounds and sapphire but once they churn out a few mil more of the ceramic insert and the next change after that it will be vintage
