Just received a message from an OF member asking if I'd like to trade my Black Bay for a case of red wine ::facepalm1::.

Anyone wish to share their stories about peculiar trade offers?

Excuse the error in the heading, I meant strange request.

The guy we bought my dad's Constellation off was selling his watch collection to collect German WWII military memorabilia, no idea why. That said the same 70 year old bloke had a giant portrait of himself in PNG holding one of the native's up by his hair while holding a revolver to his head, so the guy was unusual.

Did the guy have the gun pointed at you when he made the offer?

Obviously not enough ;-) However Chateau Latour is one of the five First Growths of Bordeaux and this particular vintage (1990) is a Wine Spectator 100 point rarity. Next year it will be just about prefect to drink and I'll let you know what it really worth then ;-)

Too funny...As luck would have it, I too bought it as part of a future offering. I was lucky enough to have bought a mixed case of 2 bottles each of the five First Growths plus 2 bottles of Cheval Blanc. All 1990 vintage ;-) They were shipped in a Lafite Rothschild wooden case.

Those were the days my friend, I thought they would never end...They did ;-(

They certainly were. Actually bought one case each of the 5 first growths. Less than 100.00US per bottle. Never happen again.

Now that you coughed-it-up, so will I. We must have bought these from the same wine merchant in New York. I took their deeply discounted mixed case offering that I believe was only $500.00 total. I had to wait over a year for delivery, but "such a deal"!

As you said: Never happen again". Now at least a $1,000.00+ for any 1 bottle ;-(

Got mine from a wine shop I know in Los Angeles. Probably the greatest wine "steal" of a lifetime (other than the '82 Petrus I picked up for a song in the early 90's). At the time my wife thought I was nuts. She still thinks I'm nuts, but she sure enjoys the wine whenever we pop a cork. Down to 4 of each now. Petrus was sold off about 10 years ago.

    Nice anecdotes guys.:)

I was wondering, at what point does the rise in value reach such a point that the wine won´t be opened anymore due to the amount of watches that could be bought if you were to sell it? :D

Hard to put a solid number on this as it varies with the wine market and my mood. Most of my wine was purchased with the intent of long term appreciation. When I see a 300% or more rise in value I usually look to sell it off. My biggest problem is I see a 100.00 bottle of 1990 LaTour and I say what the hell, it's only a hundred bucks, let's drink this stuff. It's the blood of the gods. My wife see it as a 1200.00 bottle of wine and wonders why I don't sell it.

I got lucky or broke just in time sell all but the 2 Latour's (my wife's favorite) before the dot-com crash. Just enough to buy this PP 5115J ;-)
