A REAL Calatrava

I guess the alternative to Calatravas with subdials would be the centre-seconds Calatravas like the 5227 or 5296. Patek does a better job of disguising the workhorse 324 movement (which is slightly too small) within, and thus a display back is possible. But then again, the issue of a date window then creeps up!

For 37k I also share the feeling of them getting cought with their knickers down...

It's a tad thin. The 5107 is perhaps the better basic Calatrava. Unless you step up to an annual calendar it's hard to see the value in a Patek for me.

Good point, but then I doubt Patek would have Panerai'd themselves - just as Rolex in the quartz era, I think they'd stay the course - and they did! However, for a watch like this one, I think they could have gone with a center-seconds movement maybe, so as not to betray the movement's dimensions?

Say what you will, and I feel emotionally neutral about this, but I think the era of <35mm watches selling in any volume is probably over... Patek should probably have developed a new movement for 36-39mm dress watches rather than fit a tiny sub-seconds movement into a 37mm case IMO. If it were Orient or Nomos or the like at their price point, no complaints. But Patek at $37k? I expect perfection.

I agree exactly, especially when you have a clear example in Lange doing that for their watches. It's not like they're boxing themselves into a corner, they still keep the smaller movements around and continue to put out the smaller sized cases. I don't necessarily expect perfection, but that they at least put some effort into the design.

All that said, I still love the dial on this one and wouldn't mind owning one too much as long as I could bring myself to never think about the movement size.

If they used a belt-drive instead of wheels, the subdial could be positioned anywhere. Tiny movement wouldn't matter.

I would want it to wipe my arse on request for 37k alongside keeping accurate time. Thats just me though..

Really nice watch, but if it didn't say "Patek" on it . . . what would it sell for? Perceived value? Real value? Up to the buyer/seller to determine. It's beautiful, but I'm not sure $37K beautiful when you have so many other choices. . however if I were in a position where cost was no issue, I'd add it to collection. . why not it's beautiful.

It's undeniably nice but I have the same problem with this watch as with most modern watches. The fonts and proportions just don't do it for me.

Looks great but pricing is getting out of control.

I'll take a Lange and some change back, thanks.

I think this could be said of most Swiss mechanicals.

So I got to try on the 5196P today at Mayor's in the Town Center Mall in Boca Raton. Such an amazing watch. Size is 37mm, case and buckle are platinum. List price is slightly under 37K USD. Sorry for the lousy lighting in the store.
Nice watch....!!!!
